another winchester 06 question

I have a model 06 winchester. Out of all the pictures that I have seen of these, mine has a slightly different sight, and a third sight "I think it is called a peep sight" This gun has been passed down through my family and is supposed to be all original witch isnt hard to believe because this gun is in brand new condition. What is the deal then?

    Hello jvim_bp,

    There were several different types of barrel mounted sights used on the Model 1906/06. The third "peep sight" is a tang mounted sight, and it is most likely either a Lyman No. 1A or 2A, or one of the various Marbles tang sights... Winchester used both types.

    If you can post pictures of those sights, I can very quickly and positively identify them for you. If you can not post pictures, you can send them to me at Win1885@msn.com.

    It sounds like an "Expert Model" which are very much sought after. 1906 in good condition (60% blue) or better is very unusual since it was a cheaper version of the 1890 and meant to sell for about 25% less. I rarely see an 06 that isn't used to death. IF IT IS ORIGINAL you're talking above $1200 to a serious collector.

    It sounds like an "Expert Model" which are very much sought after. 1906 in good condition (60% blue) or better is very unusual since it was a cheaper version of the 1890 and meant to sell for about 25% less.     Huh[?][?] How did you come to that conclusion[?] jvim_bp stated that it has slightly different sights than the other examples he has seen... not a different shaped slide handle. There is absolutely nothing in his original post that suggests that he has an Expert Model 06.

    Until pictures are posted, there is no way to say what it is actually worth, or if it is even still factory original. 99% of all 95%+ condition Model 1906/06s encountered are not factory original... and until proven otherwise, I will go with those odds.

    I took peep sight to be perhaps "tang sight" . Yes, it sure helps to see the gun. There is an "Expert Model" ? Yes? And it does have special sights ( as in tang sights) Neither one of us knows if he has a tang sight, but I'll guess it's a possibility assuming the gun wasn't shot very much. Somebody putting extra money in that model strikes as not just your average plinker who'd leave the gun behind the kitchen door for 45 years.

    I too am assuming a tang mounted sight based on jvim_bp's statement "I think it is called a peep sight". That said, the presence of a tang sight in no way infers that it is an "Expert Model".

    What does make an "Expert Model", is it having walnut stocks (versus gumwood), a special shaped slide handle, most likely a pistol grip buttstock, and nickel plating on the receiver (the vast majority were nickel plated verus blued, and the very few blued Expert Models that were made, were very late production). I do not believe that a tang sight was standard equipment on an Expert Model 1906/06, but I will check through my old catalogs later this evening.

    Factory mounted tang sights are much more common than you think on the standard Model 1906/06. If I had a quarter for every standard Model 1906/06 that I have seen with a correct tang sight, I could afford several of those Expert Model variants[^].

    Hickory, just an observation, but if you try to beat Bert with your knowledge of Winchesters firearms, you will be whupped good. He know his stuff more than anyone I know.

    Here are some 1906s. The top one is a all blue "Expert" with an added WS-1 Lyman peep sight. Notice the pistol grip and the shape of the forearm. The bottom three are .22 short only 1906s. They all have the smooth forearms. The second from the top is a Short, Long, Long Rifle with the grooved forearm.

    OK, the pictures (though very dark) show that you have a standard Model 06 with Marbles sights (all three of them). The rear sight is a No. 67 semi-buckhorn, and the tang sight is a Flexible Joint Simplex. As I mentioned in one of my previous replies, Winchester routinely installed both Lyman and Marbles sights on almost all of the various Models in production during the early part of the century.
