Sukele barrels
Has anyone heard of a barrel maker named Sukele? I bought a barrel at a gun show, (barrel blank) and it looks good through my borescope. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with them, or if any one has even heard of them. Thanks.

Unfortunately, I can only relate stories from others regarding Sukelle, but his quality was supposed to of the highest degree. Classic was the style that he adhered to for most of his work and his barrels were supposed to some of the best. All this is according to older gunsmiths.
It's possible that our very own Capt. Kirk or maybe I.Shute can add something of more significance.

This is a hard to find Model 98 Mauser action barreled by the legendary barrel maker W.A. Bill Sukalle of Phoenix Arizona. Complete 98 action and low swing safety, Barrel has Sukalle's tradmark rear sight and front ramp sight. Bore, crown and chamber are excellent. No rust but Blue is very thin overall, touched up with oxphot blue. This gun deserves a high quality blue job. . Also has Sukalles, low swing safety and excellent trigger that breaks clean at 3.5 lbs. Sukalle barreled rifles were prized by such famous riflemen as Jack O'connor and Elmer Keith. O'Connor states that his favorite rifle is a Sukalle barreled mauser 98 in .270 just like this one (except for a spoon handle bolt) in chapter 4 of THE RIFLE BOOK. The barrel is stamped 6446 which means it was the 64th barrel produced in 1946 by Sukalle. The action is drilled and tapped. 2 holes in the front ring and 1 in the back for a redfield 1 piece style base. The top of the front ring is marked "337" and "1940" which I believe is Gustloffwerke 1940 Steyr. There are only faint remnants of markings on the side of the front ring and no markings on the side rail. The number "8019" is also faint on the left side of front ring. The barrel is 24" and the rear sight elevator is missing. The rear sight is slotted for a ream type elevator, but also has a tapped hole for a screw type elevator.
