What 45 should I buy?

I,ve looked at Ruger,Witness and the Taurus. Now I,m TOTALLY CONFUSED ! I,m trying to stay below the $400.00 mark. New or used. Gun will be used mostly for paper punching for fun.
What is the best pistol for the money to fit my needs? Any and all input will be appreciated.

    xd .40....my .02...own it...love it.....would not trade it for any semiauto on the market (within reason[:D])

    I found a used Astra A=100 in .45acp in a pawn shop for $175. 9 round mag., double action, with controls similar to the Sig.(hammer drop safety, mag release, etc.) All metal pistol. I am very pleased with it. I am a .45acp nut but do like the .40S&W also.
    Just an idea of what you might look for.

    Believe nothing you hear and only half of what you see !!

    I have never heard anything bad about the Witness. The CZ and Witness are clones and both are very good. I would go with the Witness 45acp. My 2 cents [8D]

    Of the brands you list, the P90 Ruger is the best and most accurate. I would also look for a deal on a used 45. I bought a used P90 for $275 with some cosmetic problems.

    If you want to stay with a real 1911 instead of these 1911 wannabes, see if you can find a used Essex frame/mixed slide. I have several Essex/Colt,Caspian,Kart and Remington set ups that shoot extremely well. All were bought for around $400 or less. I have restored them all and the price today would be much higher. Give it a look...Good luck..

    I have seen the Taurus 24/7 in .45 NIB for about $339.00 locally. These are great, and very acurate, DAO guns and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it for what you want. If you want a single action, you can probably find a Springfield Armory 1911 used for about what you are looking to pay.

    Ruger P345PR is my vice. It comes with a picatinny rail so you can have gadgets and stuff for your fun plinking. but its smaller than the P90 which is harder for concealment (reason i have my P345) but it is still a nice 45 ....so those are my 2 suggestions.

    Hole in paper = 22lr taurus tracker <- fun, accurate gun and you can shoot all day for 10bux.

    using a 45 of any type for paper punching will just be a drain on the pocket book.

    A Colt MK IV Series 70 is the last of the true model 1911's. You should be able to find a used one for around $400.00 and not above $500.00. The advantage to you would be the great number of after- market parts made for the 1911-- sights, barrels, grips, mags, slides, etc. As time goes on, you can add features to it much more easily than you can any other brand.

    I'm not second guessing or making fun at your choice of caliber.
    But...
    Why buy a 45 when a 40S&W puts out a higher velocity thus in conjunction with a lighter bullet, flatter trajectory, and has more energy than a 45. To me energy = stopping power. Am I wrong.
    I'm not trying to be a smarta$$. Please someone correct me if I'm wrong.

    Flatter trajectory means something when hunting, or *maybe* for military use, but really isn't really meaningful at typical civilian shooting distances of under 10 yards.

    With similar bullet sizes/weights, the one with more energy ought to have better stopping power.

    With similar energies, the one with a bigger bullet (usually bigger caliber) will have better stopping power. This correlates roughly with momentum (ie "power factor").

    Both standard ball 9mm and .45ACP put out roughly 350 foot pounds of energy, but the .45 does it with a wider bullet that makes a bigger hole. So all else being equal .45 is probably better.

    Standard .40 puts out more energy than standard .45, but has a smaller bullet. So at first glance at the numbers it isn't entirely clear which is better. But the truth is it almost makes no difference whatever. Both are very effective, and more so with properly designed bullets.

    There are multiple answers to why one might choose a .45 over a .40, cost, availability of ammo, personal preference, etc.

    I would say find one that feels the best and then ask if there are any others with the same configuration and how they compare in quality and what others have experienced.

    For example, if you like the 1911 style, then ask for opinions of manufacturers that make the particular configuration.

    After all, you will be shooting it.
