    i'd say buy the book and build it yourself. the first rule of building a silencer, is to not tell anyone you are building a silencer. i don't condone this at all, but it is probably the only way you are going to get one.

    I'm not an expert, but i did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night.

    you will not be able to silence a 9mm very well no matter how good the silencer is...9mm is a high speed round that has most of its report come from the slug breaking the sound barrier... 380 is a good round to silence...

    Sound suppressors are NOT illegal. There are some states where it is not possible to own them but most states allow for the ownership with the payment for a tax stamp and registration with the law.

    From a manufacturer AWC:

    "Several states restrict ownership of firearms suppressors for civilians. Government and military customers don't have any state restrictions. Please see the list to the right.
    For states that do not restrict private ownership of suppressors, individuals can purchase suppressors directly from AWC.


    For details regarding suppressor ownership, or to track details of your existing order, please give us a call."

    Silencers are perfectly legal you just have to pay your transfer tax and jump through the hoops to get one in most states. You can build one legally as well in those same states but, same hoops you gotta jump through and a transfer tax.

    On of the easiest ways to look at the ammount of noise a suppressor will reduce is compre it to roughly the sound with ear plug in. I know that isnt quite what they sound like but it will give you a rough idea. Suppressors reduce the sound of the bullet leaving the bbl, but will not stop the round from cracking when breaking the speed of sound (~1100fps). Most 9mm is supersonic (over 1100fps) so you still end up with a "crack". There is some ammo, usualy the 147gr stuff that is slow enough to be subsonic. Any of the major makers do a good job, nononsense listed a few good ones. To get a suppressor takes 6mo or more and costs about $230 on top of the price of the suppressor for the tax stamp (ATF), finger prints and passport photos. You will need to find an in state dealer for the transfer and they will be able to help you out. My fist one is an Gemtech can for my .22, I started the process in January and am still waiting.

    northern militia doesn't have to need anything that is legal and obtainable for firearms. It is reasonable that he just WANTS a suppressor (silencer). It doesn't require need or a reason.

    He is asking on a public forum because he wants information regarding suppressors (silencers) the same as if it was a request about anything else to do with firearms. WHAT HE IS ASKING IS PERFECTLY LEGAL!!!!! You treat it as if there is something wrong in even discussing them. There isn't, they are just like an automatic rifle or pistol or short barreled rifles. All you need is the tax stamp and the LEO approval.

    AWc makes a great pistol suppressor (personal experience), but I hear that if you want the best you need an SWR. They are pricy, but worth the investment.

    On some guns it does. Some are designed to bleed of gas before the bullet leaves the barrel. This is done to slow the bullet down below supersonic speed. Much of the noise of a gun shot is the sonic crack of the bullet breaking the sound barrier.

    As stated, they are not illegal in most states. They are also not silencers but supressors, you can't completely silence a firearm. I have 2 supressed rifles...a 300 Whisper and a 45-70 Ruger no. 1. They are both very quiet, about the same as a 17 caliber air rifle for the 300. Bolt guns are very quiet too and on a AR15 you hear more noise from the bolt working than from the shot fired. You load sub-sonic ammunition to around 1050 fps. We built these rifles for a specific reason but they are great fun to shoot. J. D. Jones at SSK Industries have very extensive knowledge of them and makes a very good one. Both of ours came from there.
