Are critical to the monetary value of the rifles at auction. How do you measure the throat and the muzzle wear on a Garand M1?

    To measure the TE and muzzle accurately you will need a TE gauge.It is a machined tapered rod with increments along the taper of the shaft.A gunsmith who repirs Garands will have one and they can be bought at supply houses for maybe under a $100.00 these days. I got mine years ago.In a pinch for a poor mans muzzle gauge you could insert the head of a .30 cal. m2 ball round point first into the muzzle and note how far it goes inside. If it goes in up to the cartridge case the muzzle is toast.

    Just when I thought I had gotten away it pulled me back in.

    Throat erosion gage at the CMP costs about $65. The Muzzle gage costs about $35. With those two gages you are all set to evaluate an M1 barrel. Beach.

    Just to throw in one more thought, the Muzzle erosion is far liklier to be a bigger problem if it exists. I have a number of guns with worn throats that shoot well, as the muzzles are crisp.

    It is a great illustration! But you have to thank the guys at Fulton Armory for coming up with this one.
