Out of all the AK varients, wich do yall feel is the best shooting and better built. Also how available and expensive is the new russian 5.45x39 ammo and for those who own or have shot that caliber, how is it?

    Personally, I would not choose anything in 5.45X39. While the 5.56 NATO has a lot of advocates, there are some valid critical remarks against the caliber. I am sure that the critial remarks would be amplified in a round that is shorter and smaller in diameter. The 5.56 NATO has always been questionable in terms of stopping ability. The 5.45X39 could not be any better.

    My own choice in AK variants are chicom versions (Polytech and Norinco) and the VEPR.

    Personally, for the effective range they are used in, I like the 7.62X39 over the 5.56 NATO or 5.45X39.

    the russians had much more success with dropping people with the 5.45 than we do with the ss109 5.56 due to the more effective hollow nose bullet design, from what i have read/heard. you can buy this caliber cheap, but the 7.62*39 is easier to find and more fun I think.

    I Like the SAR series of Ak's. SAR 1 = 7.62X39 SAR 2 = 5.45X39 and the SAR 3 = 5.56. [8D]

    I have no personal experience with Arsenal. I have seen the prices on their web site and the money seems a little high but may be about right for a good product with a sale price mark down.

    The Chicom version made by Norinco (MAK-90) mentioned by Boeboe is a good choice. The MAK-90 is a good piece and can be found here for about 300 to 350 (smart search 'sold' auctions, not the asking prices in current auctions). I've had several that perform(ed) flawlessley.

    Consider this discussion as stamped receivers. One of my bud's had a milled MAK90 that looked great, felt much more rugged, but did not perform any better than the stamped models most folks have. Remember that the weapon is made to FUNCTION. They are not tack drivers and never can be.

    I have not shot any of the 'Romaks'. Maybe someone else has personal data for you.

    I love my Norinco's, I have a 5.56, and 7.62, I prefer the 7.62 becouse the mags are cheaper, and easier to get. I used to be an AR man, but its hard to beat the AK for the price. That is how I ended up with 5.56 ( to keep ammo the same) If you shoot you gotta have a good AK.

    I rarely see 5.45 ammo around here. If you are going to get one, stock up on ammo and get used to ordering online.

    I have an Arsenal but love my Romanians. All my guns are in 7.62x39.
    7.62x39 is the cheapest full cal ammo out there. Cheaper than 223.

    Don't worry so much and buy a 100 buck Romy kit, 54 buck reciever, 10 buck rivet set and build it. For the money cant be beat.

    I just love my Romanian SAR 1. I put a six power Russian scope (found on Gunbroker)on it and she feels and shoots like a dream. Looks like a serious piece of work. I am going to have to take a picture of my little friend.

    Like in the NFL, defense is the key.
