Benelli Nova with a Ithaca rifled slug barrel.
I need some serious help with this. I got the Ithaca fully rifled cantilever slug barrel for my Nova last year. I installed a Mueller red dot multi powered shotgun scope.
My problem is, it shoots all over the place. I have tried lightfields, federal barned expander, winchester partition gold and one other. None of them will groupe at all. I am talking at 50 yards they are hitting in a 6-8" group which needless to say is absolutely horrible. Worst shooting slug gun I have ever fired. The rings i used for this slug gun were weaver style with an adjustable base. I am wondering if this has something to do with it. I am starting to lean more toward the scope moving around than the gun itself not shooting worth a poop. Anybody have any ides or suggestions? Here is a pic of the gun (and my beagle)

The first thing I would do is toss the cantilever. and put the scope base on the top of the reciever where it belongs, but thats just my opinion.

The cantilever doesnt come off and the gun isnt drilled and tapped. The hastings slug barrels dont seem to have any problems with the cantilever mount. Do you really think this may be the problem?0 -
Be sure everything is snugged down, espec. after firing a few rounds.
Check the barrel nut and the scope rings and mounts. Also make sure your scope reticles aren't moving. A slug gun hands out some serious recoil, espec. in a gun as light as the Nova. Then the thing none of us likes to talk about: flinching, we've all done it and none of us likes to admit it, but as light as this rig is, it is possible. If not, try some less intense rounds like the federal or winchester 2 3/4 saboted rounds. All guns show a preferrence and sometimes hotter loads just hand out more bruises0 -
I had a mossy 500 cantilever that held zero just fine, year after year, pulling the barrel off after deer season...so I don't doubt the platform.
Sounds like a scope or ring problem to me.
I'd agree with making sure everything's snugged down...too bad you don't have iron sight on the critter to see if it'll shoot a group without the scope...

I have seen those barrels
but have never owned one
I would try a differant scope or rings
I also use a hastings canti and never had a
problem I use a holo sight0 -
Stupid question.......Is the scopes objective bell touching the cantelliver mount at the bottom? also those are millet rings and i had several of them over the years that would not grip the scope tube
even when the ring screws were bottomed out, Take off the scope make sure all four ring windage screws are TIGHT and alighed then use the friction pads provided with the rings or if you chucked them use masking tape to line the ring bottoms then tighten all the screws screws making sure the scope is not touching anywhere, if the problem persists it may be a problem with the internals of your scope. good luck0 -

No the scopes objective bell isnt touching the cantilever mount. I am really starting to think it has something to do with the rings. I didnt like them from the start before I even installed them on the gun but nobody had any weaver style rings locally and I needed rings in a hurry. I am just going to get some standard rings and try them out. The barrel itself looks to be very high quality inside and out.
Thanks for all the suggestions and tips guys!!!! I will work this out one way or another. I really love this gun and want it to shoot slugs really well. I am a bound and determend man on a mission right now!!!!
