I use a Was-h-i-t-a stone to get a semi-decent edge, then a Gerber steel to get a fine edge, then a strop (back of a quality belt will do) for a razor edge. With those in play, I can guarantee a blade you can shave with.

A real nice, easy to use sharpener is the sharpmaker made by spyderco. Here's the link... http://spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=77
You can get them for much less than the MSRP even Cabelas sells them cheap! I did opt for the diamond stones for mine.
The knives I do on mine are beyond razor sharp... I call them "scary sharp!"

I just bought a couple of these Lansky sharpeners a couple months ago, had 5 hunting knives razor sharp in no time. ( you can find them for less $ if you look around)

I used to use a butcher steel and always got mine razor sharp. Now I use this hand held thing I bought at Menards or Home Depot, I don't remember which for $2.99. It has two stones mounted opposite each other and they are about 3/4" long and set at the right angle to best sharpen your knife with. There is hard plastic around this and the whole thing is attached to a handle with a protective guard and a finger hole for extra grip.
I get my knives good and sharp with the right angles on this and then polish them with a butcher steel if need be.

We have the second amendment so that all the rest are secure....UNK>
