S&W 386 mountain lite .357

What is the word on this revolver? I have heard that the .44 (model 396?) is a bear, almost painfull to shoot.

But has anyone had any experience with the 357/38 version. I am looking for a 'backwoods' gun. I want a lightweight revolver, and am really leaning towards the Smith and Wesson Model 386 mountain lite 357.

They are rather uncommon, and I have not had the opportunity to fire one, much less even handle one.

Is it worth the price?

    I have the 396.

    My dealer has the 396 and the 386 (.357). He disliked the recoil of the 357 loadings so much that he will be getting it Mag-na-ported. Still likes it and wants to carry it.

    ??? can't figure those masochists[:)] ???

    Thanks for the info. Magna-porting the barrel will futher add to the cost. Is it worth it?

    I own both the 386 and the 329. Yes they are a handful to shoot but they are intended to be a last resort revolver for backcountry purposes when loaded with full house loads. I carry the 329 in Colorado and New Mexico when I am fishing and or hiking. I am mainly concerned with cougar and black bear over there. In west Tennessee/Arkansas/Mississippi area, I carry my 386 when fishing and or hiking. The most I have to worry about here is wild dogs and or two-legged varmints. If you want to shoot either gun regularly just use special loads in either one. That is what I do.
