more infro 1897 win trap gun (only winchesters)

Dave ( only winchesters) the groove on top is matted.It is a take down model serial # match except number on receiver has the letter D above the number. serial is 4111xx so what year was it made. what does the D stand for above seri al # And the slide has no screws in it.I mention before that the blueing was worn off, well the finish has a brownish color to it. Still nice and smooth no pitting. Original posting on this gun was 9/16.

    Hello boltaction,

    The serial number indicates that your gun was manufactured circa 1910/11. The "D" indicates a minor production change that occurred during the 60-year production span of the Model 1897/97. Most Model 1897s in the 400,000 serial range are "E" variants versus "D", but there was a larger serial number overlap between the "D" and "E" marked guns. I would really like to see a few pictures of your gun.

    Hello bolt" well with the matting on the top of the receiver and the "Trap Gun" breech bolt, I have a lot of confidence that it really is a Trap gun. however since the "stocks" have been replaced, and according to Bert, Cody doesn't letter 1897s above serial number 400,000. We still don't know if it's a "Trap Gun" or "Tournament Gun" Some Tournaments came with Black Diamonds in the butt stock. barrel matting was an option for both, but since your is a plain barrel, we may never know exactly which gun you have.

    Every now and then I'll see original "Trap" grade stocks come up for sale, about once or twice a year. Depending on if it's a butt stock or forearm, or a set. Generally runs $250-$600 depending on condition for a set, butts run $75-$300, forearms, $75-$150. It is a gun definately worth keeping since it has no rust or pits.

    Can the stocks be reproduced, yes like I said earlier, it would run in the neighbor hood of $575-$900. Depending on how fancy and if you have Black diamonds put in. Personally I'd wait for used stocks to come up for sale, start looking now!, LOL.

    If you want to see a nice "Black Diamond Trap Gun" and on the rare side being a 16ga. go look at GB item #37433968 The opening bid is below market on this one. It will give you an idea of what your gun may have looked like at one time.

    Bobski there is no black Dimond on the stock. Bert H will post pictures later. thanks guy's for all your help.
