Revolver refinishing question

Here's one for the board experts:

I have an old beat-up blued Smith revolver. The finish is awful, nearly all gone, and looks like somebody tried to rub it off with a wire wheel and did a terrible job of it.

I just want this thing for a "shooter". I don't care a lick about collectors value. So I just want a finish that looks "OK" (or better) is durable, and not too expensive.

Nickel, chrome, parkerizing, Robar, blueing. . .I don't care so long as the finish is good, and my wallet isn't too bruised.

Anyone have any recommendations on where to send this, what to do or how much this kind of refinishing might cost?

    Some have been raving about the new "paint and bake" finishes such as Brownells or Midway stock. No, it's not cold bluing, but then again, it doesn't cost near as much, either.

    The easiest and cheapist is to have someone glass ead the surface and then reblue it. It leaves a nice matte finish. You should be able to find someone to do that for not more than $100.00.

    Might want to check out DuraCoat finish--self-application is fairly cheap. They have kits that will do up to 4 guns for less than $50.

    You could even use Blue Wonder and do it your self. Classic95 has experience with that product.

    I had this Diamondback parkerized by a local smith some 10 years ago. It had minor pitting, but was otherwise O.K. Seems to be durable enough. Price at that time was $30.

    You need to find someone who does the "spray and bake" thing. The metal needs to be probably "prepped " to achieve good results. The surface needs to also be phospated before the painting to achieve a successful bond. The finish will be very durable, longlasting and will hide a multitude of dings. I have done dozens of them, both for myself and customers. The finish I use is KG Coatings. However, I am NOT solicting your business...!!! Good Luck..
