What 1911 should I get?

I was wondering if anyone had any advise on picking a 1911.

My budget is $500-$600

Here is the one im considering:

Springfield-Armory 1911A1 GI .45 5" Barrel in Stainless Steel(MSRP: $578) or the same gun but parkerized (MSRP:$502)

does any one have either of these guns and have anything to say about them?

    I have a Rock Island Armory 1911 .45 and love it. Wonderfully accurate and cost 300 shipped from sarcoinc.com. I have 400 rds through it and have had no FTF, even with really cheap ammo. If you have 500, maybe consider buying the RIA and building it up. It accepts all aftermark gear (havent done anything to mine but my buddy has). Just an idea.

    I've been wondering how the new Thompson 1911s are now that Kahr owns Thompson. Anybody know? The Thompsons are US manufactured which appeals to me but I've heard the earlier Thompson 1911s weren't too good on quality.

    I had a Thompson 45 years ago. Nice looking gun but the first time I took it to the range, the front sight fell off after about twenty rounds of fire. I sent it back and of course they made good on it, but after I got it back, I had lost confidence in it's quality so I sold it.
    I bought one of the "loaded" 45's from Springfield about five years ago. I paid $600 for it brand new. It's been a great gun. Accurate, nice looking, and never a problem. I don't think you can go wrong buying a Springfield.

    if your a fan of springfield (which I am as well ) and have $600 to spend I would go with the mil-spec as opposed to the gi....now be careful there's alot of dealers on here that confuse the 2 or call the GI a mil-spec GI....but there is considerable difference...the GI is your basic bones 1911 while the mil-spec has the goodies (better trigger, beveled magazine entrance much better sights etc) so don't be fooled.....here's the milspechttp://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?item=37190809

    The Springfield also has a lifetime warranty, and a terrific coupon that makes it poossible to buy extra factory mags and accessories at very reduced prices. I have two and love them.

    Ditto on the Mil-Spec Springfield.
    For the money it is an EXCELLENT shooter. With all the initial 'improvements' over the GI model at a fraction of an after-market job. The bevels, other clearances and polishing is a great help, but the barrel on the one I got is superb. Expanded Barrel/bushing fit is near a custom hand-fit, bore is slick as owl squat.

    The biggest 'tell-tale' on the GI vs MILSPEC is the lowered and widened opening in the slide for spent shell ejection. You can notice that easily from a distance. If someone tries to tell you there is not much difference, they either don't know or are shinin you.

    i went to the local gun shop to see what they have. They have a parkerized mil-spec and a SS mil-spec, they were out of GIs so im that mil spec looks real nice. I probably go with the SS.

    Does the mil-spec have a one or two peice barrel?
