Detective Special

I have a colt detective special 38 caliber. The serial number 172xxx. The pistol was purchased in the late 1970's. I am trying to find out if it is nickel plated or stainless steel.

  Don't believe the Detective Special of that era was stainless. Colt didn't even start making the stainless Python's until the 80's.

  stainless is a little uncommon...although i did have a 4" stainless.try sticking a magnet to it. if its stainless,its real cool!

  Thomas, Welcome to the forums. Your Det Special is nickel. They were not made in stainless during that period.
  
  The stainless Det Spec was introduced in 1997.

  BTW, many of the "stainless steels" used in firearms are magnetic.
