Is there a way to tell from the serial number if a Python is nickle or bright stainless? Is there an "s" in the serial number?

  No special markings. If your inquiry is for V88511, made in 1980, that Python is nickel. The stainless guns didn't start until around 1985.
  Nickel usually has a gold-ish coloring while polished stainless has just a gray tone. If you put them side by side, you'd be able to tell easily.
