Gun safe ???

HUNT WALKERS
The house I'm in now is to small for my safe to be inside, so it is in the garage. I replaced the 12" golden rod with an 18" golden rod which is far bigger than required for my safe. I've been out of town for the last two weeks and when I just now opened my safe it smelled like a basement and most all of the guns had green and orange mold on the stocks, all the slings are moldy, and some of the guns had rusted. The guns in the center of the safe actually had sweat on them. The dehumidifier is hot enough you don't want to touch it. Nothing in the garage gets like this, so give me some idea's about what I need to do to correct the problem.

    Did you check to see if there was a power failure while you were gone for 2 weeks? I've had two safes with golderrods for years with no problem. Wish I could be more help.

    No problem with power failure, deep freeze is on the same outlet.

    Looks like you have some cleaning to do. while your cleaning I would keep the safe door open and make sure there isn't moisture trapped inside. Then get the safe off the concrete floor with some boards. PT wood works good but anything is better then having the safe on the concrete. that should slove your problem.

    No there is not any standing water nearby, the garage floor is clean and dry and nothing else in the garage is sweaty, moldy or anything. I do have it anchored directly to the concrete floor, which I will change ASAP. I have it open now while I'm cleaning the guns. It's a sad day when a man comes in off the road looking forward to being with the ones he loves the most and finds out there is a problem. The BT 99 took it the worst. For the most part the moldy crap wipes right off, but some of my guns got pretty rusty in a few places. They were left clean and nicely oiled. Thanks for the help so far, keep the ideas coming!

    --[8D] I live in California--I have GOLDEN RODS IN BOTH SAFES-I have NO humidity problem---[:p][:p][:p][:D]

    Did you have the anchors drilled through the concrete slab and then bolt through the bottom of your safe ? If so then you created a direct path from the wet earth below the slab into your safe. You need to have a seal around the anchor bolts if this is the case.

    I have always used the canisters with the little pellets in them. I take them out every month and recharge them in the oven. They work great. When I bought my safe the dealer told me that Golden Rods don't really work that good, but I don't have any personal experience with them.

    There are really 2 problems involved here.

    First, in most parts of the country, the ground is damp. Concrete is porous, & will wick moisture from the ground - forever. That's why most of us keep a dehumidier in the basement so that we won't get mold. I am certain that Hunt Walkers will see proof of this when he moves his safe: It will be rusty on the bottom. Eventually, the floor of his safe would have been eaten away by the rust.

    A second factor is responsible for the damage to Hunt Walkers guns: conductivity. The ground underneath his garage is cold; since his safe is not thermally isolated from the cement floor, that cold is conducted from the floor to the steel of his safe. When the warm moist air in his garage hit the cold steel of his safe, the moisture condensed on everything IN his safe. There was obviously enough moisture to overcome the capacity of his Goldenrod.

    Yachtdave was right on. By elevating the safe on a wood pallet, the contents can be protected by the usual Goldenrod or dessicants. Just be sure to vent the bottom of the safe so that moisture isn't trapped underneath it.

    On a related subject, NEVER store a gun in a zippered gun rug. The moisture in the air will be attracted by the zipper, &, if the rug is closed, the gun will rust.
