What is the best quality heavy barrel 300 WSM under $1000? 0 -

I could be a little on the overzealous side but I think this could well be a 1500-2000 yd. round. It has right at the same power as the .300 Win Mag but in a shorter more efficient Cartridge. I think it would be an awesome target round.
From the hunting standpoint it produces better than 1000 ft. lbs. of energy at 900 yds. That is plenty of energy to kill an animal. Due to trajectory you will still need to adjust for elevation on deer at 300 yds. and on elk at 400 yds. When shooting animals within your range it will have a much more pronounced affect on the animal than the .308 would. About 400 fps faster than the .308 for the same weight bullet.

only 400fps huh.....only about 20% more velocity.....thats a big deal......I have a .300 wsm mag and the fact alone that I can utiliza a 23 3/4in bbl and not have any compromise in velocity is enough for me

why?...the ballistics are identical....just brand preference?
I've also been told that the long range performance drops off a lot quicker with the short mags. If you really want to go with a short mag, I'd recommend the .300 SAUM.

I could be mistaken, but I believe the SAUM has considerable more velocity than the WSM's have. I don't have the .300SAUM in my reloading manuals, so you might check on line for some ballistic charts.
MY MISTAKE...the ballistic data that I've been able to find for factory ammo has them being about the same. I kind of assumed that it being the short version of the UM, it would far surpass the WSM, as the UM has about 20% more case capacity than the WM...and 13% more than the Weatherby Mag...and about 300fps over the WM's. I'm not real sure what you can achieve with some hot hand loads.

Nope.....300 saum 180grn core lokt...2960 fps at muzzle
.300wsm 180grn silvertip 3010fps at muzzle....virtually identical (depending od course on bullet bc etc ) but both .30 short mags push a 180 grn pill right around 2900-3000fps

I bought a ruger #1 IN 300 WINMAG 6-8 years ago and later began to kick myself that I didn't know and wait for the new and "better' short mags and the RUMS. After "settling' for the rifle I have, I have seen all of the hipe of these new rounds disipate and show that the 300 winmag aint that far behind and may be better. The only thing I truely wish I had seen in the future was the stainless #1. That is my only regret 0 -
The 300 WSM is only as good as the 300 Win Mag with bullets of 180 grains and lighter. Once you go over 180 grain bullets, the 300 WSM doesn't have the case capacity to push them very fast.

The MV's you are quoting are with Remington factory ammo...not sure what you can get out of handloads. See my edited post above.

true but my 2005 lyman handloading manual states the same...there's no case capacity difference.....the ballistic's between the 2 are going to be ALMOST identical....same case....same pill....everything being equal your going to get the same ballistics.....the wsm's took off better because of superior marketing....but if you like remington guns....got with the saum
aglore....very true....can handload 200grn around 2700-2900 depending on bc coefficent of pill...at least thats what my reloading manual says....problem is that your looking at compressed loads due to the case capacity limitations. and you gotta find something pretty slippery to get in the 2900fps range.....but I've never felt the need to hit something with anything bigger than 180grn......there's plus's and minus's guys....but I like the .300wsm very much for allot of reasons......

I just read your edited post and not to sound like some know it all a$$...they aren't shortened versions of the actual ultra mags...thats just marketing....shortened ultra mags would be regular long action....these are true short mags.....same case and action size as the wsm's
