1000 dollar norinco AK? something smells
my nephew gave a buddy 500 bucks to go find a preban ar15. he came up short, so the guy gave him a folding stock chineese norinco style ak semi auto version.
the guy who sold it swears the gun is worth 500 and in some places like n.y. where he got it, go for over 1000. it has something to do with the markings and parts. can someone enlighten me on this? personally, i think my nephew got took. are there variations worth that out there?

The original Chinese folding stock AK's were selling for $600-$800 last time I checked. I think $500 is a good price if it is in nice condition.

Norinco folders are preban and desirable. Five hundred sounds good.
I would like to find a Norinco .223 sidefolder for $500.
NIB Norincos should be worth $1000-1200.0 -
what exactly makes it worth that price? what part(s) is/are rare? 0 -
I believe that it's the factory folders that are bringing high prices.

Although this is a .223, it is what a pre-ban factory folder should look like. http://ak-47.net/ak47/84-s.html If your nephew got a original pre-ban folder for $500 he got a very good deal. Unfortunately a lot of post ban guns have been rebuilt as folders in recent years, both with legal and/or questionable parts. If you can give us the serial number with the last two digets Xed out we might be able to offer you some guidance.0 -
May be market timing.
I know that right before 'sundown', I sold a couple of MAK-90's in the local paper for triple. After the first one I ran 'make offer' for a Saturday. Took the wife on our first cruise. She doesn't grunt about my gun habit so much anymore.

If it's the red bakelite furniture and a side folder, definately worth well over $500. Underfolders are less, but still worth well over $500.

The upper left side of the receiver should carry the follow stamped marking:
84S for fixed wood stock .223, 56S for fixed wood stock 7.62
84S1 for .223 underfolder, 56S1 for 7.62 underfolder
84S2 for 7.62 sidefolder, 56S2 for 7.62 sidefolder0
