how do one of those "golden rod" safe duhumidifiers work, like the ones you have to plug in

    They heat the air within the safe. The molecules of heated air are further apart and carry less moisture than an equal volume of cooler air. They also (mostly) prevent condensation of water on the metal of the firearms.

    I live in a humid part of the country, and they are very effective. I have used them for years, and have never had a problem. When using dessicant, sooner or later you will not see when it needs recharging, and here comes the rust.

    A long life light bulb of the same wattage does the same thing and is cheaper to purchase and rarely needs changing.

    They have a plug that you would put through the little hole in the bottom of your safe that probably has a plug from the factory. I thought of one of these and a light also, but wondered if it might have an effect on the fire protection. When in doubt, use dessicants kinda like the little bags that come in jerkey[:)]

    The golden rod does a very good job but does not remove moisture. Where would it go? You are familiar with the term "relative humidity" from the TV weatherman. That's the amount of moisture the air contains compared to how much it can hold.

    The higher the air temperature the more moisture it can hold. That's why in cold weather a warm house can have water drops on an uninsulated window. The window is colder than the room and the moisture from the air condenses on the cold glass.

    Just the opposite happens in your safe. When you open your door the safe takes in a charge of room air. Whatever the house relative humidity is, when the door is shut and the temperature raises the relative humidity drops.

    That means that the air doesn't want to give up it's moisture to condense on your guns.

    I'm no weatherman but that's pretty much how it works - and it does work. Dessicants grab moisture from the air and hold it but need to be recharged by heating. Fortunately they change color to tell you when it's time.

    Either one works.
