winchester 1890 short or long

I have a Winchester 1890 stamped 22 long. I understand that they were built to be caliber specific, but its seems to me that I should be able to shoot shorts. I understand that I can not shoot long rifle. How is the chamber machined differently so shorts will not function?

Thank you to anyone who can clear this up for me.

  It's not the chamber that makes it caliber specific. It's the cartridge lifter. You could probably get a .22 short to fire if you loaded it like a single shot. The rifleing is also a different twist from shorts to longs, which could affect accuracy. It just won't feed shorts. If you could find and install a cartridge lifter from a 1906 model with the cartridge cut off and reamed the chamber to accept .22 long rifles, it would shoot all three. Shorts, Longs and long rifles.

  dont worry about the rifling twist-it is the same for 22 short and 22 long at 20". Long rifle is 16". another carrier is all you need for the specific caliber or an 06 carrier as mentioned above.

  Thanks for everyones input. You guys have cleared that up for me. It is a great example of an 1890 and I would never dream of modifing it.
