Remington 511 Scoremaster
Several years ago, my dad gave me a 511 Scoremaster .22. I cherish this gun and will probably pass it on to my son as he grows big enough to shoot it. I have found that this gun is very accurate and the fact that it will shoot any .22 cal round makes it a prize to me. I have used it many times to get the attention of some rogue aramadillos who have wandered onto my back porch and by using a CB short, the neighbors don't have a fit when I fire a couple off late at night. I have toyed with the idea of having it fit for a scope but have been discouraged in this endeavor by local gunsmiths. Are there any types of peep sights that will fit this gun without modification of the firearm?

That's silly. If it's a collector's item, perhaps ...
but a shooter ... nah!
I got my Remington 511 in Oct. '54 - actually
have home movies of it my dad took - of
me proudly shooting it in an abandoned
gravel pit in Lake Orion, MI. (heavily bundled
against the frigid cold) that my first day of shooting!
Well, in 1960 I scoped it and took many hundreds
of varmints with it up on a friend's ranch in the local
S. CA mountains and later on my amigo's rancho
down in the Baja.
In the early 80's I took my first two kids with me
rabbit hunting around here, Arizona and New Mexico,
Although we had a number of 10/22's they still fought
over the old scoped Remington.
Then in the mid-90's I took my other two kids out with me
- mostly up to the ranch. There was always squabbling
over the little 511, even though all of the 10/22's had
long since been scoped!
Now, guess what? I have four grandsons (so far)
and the oldest one (13) has laid claim to that old
Remington 511 making the other three jealous
of him (and it)! I know this might be hard to swallow -
kids choosing an old bolt action over a semi-auto -
but I assure you that seems to be the continual
point of conflict amongst the little ankle biters!
Now, if I could do it over again and 'protect' that
classic by not drill and tapping it ... and by not
takiing it out with a bunch of kids ... no thank you!
Wouldn't give up those memories - scoped
or unscoped for anything. Somehow it just
wouldn't be right!
My only regret now is that I'm going to miss the
fireworks when 'grandpa' is completely dead
and gone! I can think of nine people (so far)
who will be battling for that old Remington 511
Scoremaster - scoped!
I'll probably have to work out some kind of time
share with (my lawyer's assistance) so my kids
and grandkids can take it along with them when
they take their kids (and eventually grandkids?)
out to shoot!
Wonder how long it's going to be around?
Kinda makes one think, eh?

My 511 shoots just fine with the sights that Remington installed on it way back when. Its your "classic" go ahead and scope it if you want, mine will never be topped with "glass"[:D]

There is a simple solution here. Buy another on ethat is grooved for scope rings to put a scope on. Keep this one original. Mkae sure you teach kids to shoot with iron sights first. Scopes are a crutch. Available peeps will require at least 2 holes.

I glued a one-piece scope base on my Remington 510 so it wouldn't have to be drilled/tapped. It has held perfectly for over 7 years. I used a good quality epoxy mix that is transparent. It looks good too.

TWALKER may have the right idea. Brownell's sells blank scope bases that can be cut to size with hacksaw. then epoxy on receiver. If ever have to remove heat will loosen it. Personally I would drill and tap it and enjoy it. Mine is groved for scope but I drilled and tapped it for a micrometer sight. My wife gave me mine in 1958.

good evening all,
my 511 was given by a bostonian at a yard sale that was afraid to touch the little rifle she found in a closet. she was closing her father's estate.
as a kid i did not like magazines, prefered a tube feed.
it took a few posts on gun/brokers until i found what was need to bring her back.
i still do not like the magazine feed but she shoots like a champ.
i know i will be shot down for this but i bore sighted the rifle. no other adjustments needed. the only squirrels i have missed were running/jumping.
as i age, i get back into my childhood,

The one piece base I glued on my rifle fits around the bolt opening area of the receiver so it was easy to position. I believe it was a Weaver base made for the 500 series. 0
