WINCHESTER 88 IN 284, WHATS IT WORTH?

I HAVE A MODEL 88 IN 284 IN VERY GOOD CONDITION, DOES ANYONE HAVE SOME IDEA OF WHAT IT IS WORTH? ALSO, WHERE CAN I FIND AMMO? DO I HAVE TO RELOAD IT MYSELF?

    Price depends mostly on if it's a pre'64 or post'64. They only made the pre '64 one year in the .284 and makes the value higher. If your serial number is higher than 151693 it is probably a post 64. Also depending on the condition of wood and metal.
    Pre '64 Good Condition $1200 - $1800.
    Post '64 Good Condition $900.00 - $1200.00
    One must be careful of stock splitting behind the tang on the 284, alot of them has hairline cracks which is hard to see. If the stock is cracked the value is dropped at least 50%.

    Ammo. can be found at most Sporting Good stores. The ammo is not as rare as the rifle.

    You won't find a tang on the .284. They were phased out by 1957. I have seen only one M88 that hairlined behind the recoil block and then went on to need a replacement stock (almost impossible to come by in decent shape) Several friends have gone out and purchased MPI fiberglass stocks to avoid beating their semi-collectables. They run about $250 but you might find it cheap insurance on a rifle assured to appreciate that you would like to hunt in the meanwhile. Especially if you can detect a grain pattern in the wood that looks predisposed to cracking.

    I have about 8 boxes of 150gr Power Points in the Yellow Winchester boxes, and I havnt seen any factory 284 ammo in a while. I don't use them because my 284 really likes the handloaded 140 gr Ballistic Tips.

    Tang or recoil block ? Whatever one wants to call it . pre '57's were cloverleaf tang which caused a lot of stock splitting. In 1957 they did away with the cloverleaf shape . 1957 and up were rounded TANGS or RECOIL BLOCKS ????

    I have a new in the box Model 88 stock, post 64, but it would have to come with the rest of the gun.

    You are correct! Since the .284 wasn't manufactured until 1963, you won't find one with the old style "cloverleaf" recoil block. Sorry about my last post, thought I knew what I was doing!
