Ithaca Shotgun ID

Need info on my dad's 12 ga. Ithaca double barrel.
There are no serial or model numbers. Both barrels are stamped ,smokeless powder steel. The bottom plate extends underneath the trigger gaurd and appears to be fastened to the stock with screws. There is a dog engraved on each side of the action. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hello Phil,

    I can almost 100% guarantee you that your dad's old Ithaca SxS shotgun has a serial number on it (in more than one place). You are correct in that it does not have a Model identification on it though.

    If you break the it down (remove the forend piece and take the barrels off of the frame, you should find the serial number marked on the under side of the forend piece (in the steel), on the bottom flat of the left barrel, and on right-side of the frame water-table. On the left-side flat of the water table, it should be stamped with gauge, and possibly a grade number (above the gauge stamp).

    The serial number will identify which specific Model it is, and approximately when it was manufactured.

    Bert: You are right, the s/n is 272264, There is an S over the 12 on the left side.

    Hello Phil,

    OK, what you have is an early Flues Model that was manufactured circa 1916. It most likely was manufactured with short chambers (for 2-5/8-inch shells), and even if it has 2-3/4-inch chambers, it is NOT advisable to shoot it with any modern manufactured 12 gauge shells. The frame on the Flues Model is well documented as being somewhat fragile when exposed to shooting modern shells.
