Used Pre 64 Model 70 or Used Kimber ?
Setting aside nostalgia, collectibility,etc.; just how good is the Winchester 70 pre 64 versus today's "quality" hunting rifles in a 30-06, .270 or .308 caliber? If you could purchase a nice model 70 shooter for the same price as lets say a used Kimber or another wood stocked equivalent brand/model; which would you buy? I continue to question how a 50 year old used rifle could match a 2 or 3 year old rifle which purportedly was crafted in basically the same quality manner? I would apprciate hearing from the experts who have first hand knowledge regarding this question.

Simple answer... I would buy the 50-year old Winchester[^]. Seriously, there is a big difference in the craftsmanship between the venerable old Model 70 and that 2 or 3 year old Kimber... they were definitely not built in the same fashion. There is a damn good reason for that Winchester to still be in top shooting condition after 50+ years of use... first rate quality[^]. Additionally, the Winchester will only continue go up in value over time, whereas the Kimber most likely will not.

...just my 2 cents worth I'd take the 50+ yr old Winchester model 70 in a heart beat. I collect '52 issue and have 30-06,257 Roberts,270, and a 300 H&H the accuracy is flawless. The 300 H&H one holed the "x" at 100 yds last time at the range. Not bad for a 53 year old, both operator and machine combo.

The Pre 64 Winchester no question. Unless you are going to spend a bundle building a custom rifle, which will probably use a Pre 64 action, you can't come close with any of the present day rifles.

The problem is that a smart buyer wouldn't set aside the nostalgia, collectibility, and resulting appreciation of the old Winchester. It's true that some new rifles will shoot with the best of the old, but we're still a long way from seeing appreciation of a NIB 2005 rifle. 0 -

nostalgia and appreciation may be the only seperating factors. I would bet that even as well made as the pre-64's are, they will have a very hard time besting the Kimber on paper.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

i have to agree with justc on this one. i would find it hard to believe a 50 year old gun can shoot with a kimber. i also don't see why a kimber wouldn't appreciate in value 50 years from now. they don't flood the market with guns like remington 700's, ruger 77's, winchester 70's, ans savages. they will at least retain their value now and will grow more value as time goes on.

Kimber makes a great 22 rimfire. The Pre 64's are two steps above the centerfires.

Snickers hit the nail pretty good in his first post.
Use of the 'older' actions to make new custom 'one holers' is pretty much S.O.P. There must be a reason greater than nostalgia.
It raises a question I had hoped to see answered. If the 'new Weatherbys' are putting out m.o.a. products, are the platforms for these 'new guns' from the same old reliable production ?0
