Finally joined the .17 HMR club

My friends have been bragging about how great the .17 HMR cartridge is for a couple years now. I told them I'd get one when I found a used rifle I could afford at the local pawn shop. Today was the day. I picked up a Marlin 917VS with a gray laminated stock,stainless barrel/action,Millet rings and a Tasco 3-9 scope for $175. How good is this rifle? What can I expect in accuracy and how far will it take groundhogs cleanly? Will it be any good on turkeys? Do they load FMJ ammo or only hollowpoints? I replaced the Tasco with a new Simmons 44 Mag 3-10X44 that the Simmons Co. sent me as a replacement for a previous 3-10 that didn't make it on my .338 Win. Magnum. It doesn't have an Adj. Obj. and I hope that's not a problem. I'll see tomorrow how it shoots. I want to see myself what all the fuss is about.
P.S. I put a Leupold 3-9x50 on the .338 Magnum.

    The Marlin is an excellent gun from what I've heard and read. In respect to the articles I've read in Shooting Times and Gun Digest, the Marlin seems to hold the tightest groups.

    Sounds like you bought an excellent gun at a very good price.

    CCI now makes an "game point" bullet in 20 gr. so you are good to go on Turkeys. Accuracy is phenominal. 1/2 inch at 100 yds the norm. I use CCI TNT to regularyl take ground squirrels at 300 yds here in AZ. I miss a lot but I hit a lot too. All depends on the breeze. Great fun those 17's. My 17 is the most accurate rifle I have. And I have a bunch, and expensive ones too.

    Welcome to the club TWalker [;)] You made a very good deal on your 17.
    I haven't seen any fmj for it yet but that doesn't mean they don't make them.As far as shooting turkeys a head shot would be the only place, I have taken prairie dogs out as far 300 yards
