Benelli Nova pump, compared to other pump shotguns
I am looking for an all around pump shotgun. One gun for all, no matter if I am going to squirrel, rabbit, bird, or turkey hunt. I am extremely interested in the Benelli Nova pump 12 gauge but, I know very little about the gun. I know Benelli is known for there semi-auto's but, haven't heard anyone say anything on the nova pump. I would just like some opinions from others and ask if there is a better pump shotgun for the money? Most that I have checked with are asking around $350 for the Benelli pump.

Excellent pump shotgun, and I believe it to be the best one out there. I've never had any problems with mine, and its never let me down. This thing is invincible compared to everything else. They don't rust like the 870's, and are versatile. One feature that really sets it apart is the mag stop button located of the fore arm. You can the depress the button in order to unload the chamber, leaving rounds in your mag tube. That way you can safely unload the chamber while having shells in it, or you can quickly switch out to a higher powered load. Some people here will question the synthetic reciever, but don't let them fool you, the thing is TOUGH. It goes bang with anything from 2 3/4" up to 3.5" shells. Its SUPER easy to field strip and clean, there are only two pins you have to remove to take out the entire trigger assembly and then simply take out the bolt. Benelli did a great job will minimizing the moving parts, thus making a more reliable pump gun. I've been in a duck blind with a fellow and his 870, he had it all in pieces, tryin to make it work again, mine without a hiccup. But in the unlikly chance mine did fail like his, it could be up and running again in less then 2 minuts. Solid gun that will never let you down and is very well made.

Thanks Beeramid. I thought , from what I have seen on the internet, that this was the best pump for the buck. I just wanted some words from someone that has actually had one in the field. You just helped put away any doubts I may have had. Defintely going to get the Benelli. Thanks again. 0 -
Kudos to the Benelli Nova. Not a pump out there that even comes close to the Nova. It points really good, shoots really good, looks really good, at least to my tastes it does, and it has at least one feature that other pumps don't have, and that's the button to keep the magazine from putting another round in the chamber so you can manually put a load of a different make-up in the chamber. 0 -
Just a note---Benelli isn't the only pump with a magazine cut-off. I have a Browning BPR that I bought in 1979 which has a magazine cut-off. It's a collar around the magazine tube right where the magazine tube meets the receiver. You twist the collar to the single-shot mode, then you can work the action to eject the round in chamber without chambering another round. I don't know when they dropped it, but I know the BPR hasn't had this feature for quite a while. I never found it to be all that useful, but it is unique compared to the other pumps. That said, I would not speak against the Benelli. I know it's a great gun, and you won't go wrong getting it. 0 -
I appreciate the advice. one thing I did forget to ask in my original post, is the recoil reducer that Benelli offers for the nova pump an effective tool or does it not make much difference at all? Just curious before I order. 0 -
Shooting 3" shells, I haven't seen the need for the reducer. Get it only if the recoil is too much for you. 0 -

That I don't know, never had the need for it. I have fired a couple boxes of 3.5s and it wasnt unbearable. I do know that its a mercury filled tube and I suspect that it will change the balance of the gun and in theory make felt recoil less noticable. Again if you need it, then get it, or you can always get it later. Unless you've got a shoulder problem, I don't think you'll need it.

Gunluv280 you're right about that Browning BPS, however they had to quit making them with the switch because, according to a Browning Tech that I talked too, too many people weren't reading the owners manual to learn about the switch and were sending the shotgun in to get fixed because they wouldn't put a shell in the chamber when all they had to do was move the switch to the "on" position. I found it useful during deer season. Several times over the years we'd be making a drive and push a coyote to a stander, and rather than wasting a slug, I'd just flip the switch and throw in a load of BB shot and lay him down. No, I didn't use it every day, but I found it useful enough to like it. As far as the mercury recoil reducers, I don't have one in my Nova, but other people said they could tell a difference. I guess I just pull the trigger and don't worry about the recoil. When you're looking at a 20 pound giant canadian goose, you don't think much about recoil anyway, at least I don't 0 -
Some people say the Nova kicks like a horse.
But the 12 gauge 3?" shells do that to anyone using them in any 3?" compatible gun. It's not the Nova that develops a special kind of recoil, it's the shells.
Yes the Nova might be on the light side, weightwise and packs quite a kick. But a gun, using the same shells, weighing in at the same weight - kicks roughly the same.
An option is to add weight, which the Mercury-recoilreducers do.
Try the gun with the shells you're likely to use - and please keep in mind that you might not use 250 shells per day on a hunt.
If you only use a few shells, you most likely won't be bothered by the recoil. If you're bothered, consider using the recoil-reducer.
But other than that, Benelli have always been and will always be a supreme quality gun. It will function flawlessly if you care just a little for it.
I doubt you'll find anything that will be of better quality and still have the simplicity and reliability that the Benelli have.
I wouldn't hold any doubt if I was presented a Benelli product.

I have never known anyone that has owned a Nova, and would buy another. I'm not a really big fan of 870's but they are alot better than a Nova. THe slides are clunky and rattle alot. Even people that love Benelli don't have anything good to say about the Nova.

Well make me the first, its the only pump shotgun I'll ever buy again. I've got nothing against the 870, but I don't think it adds up to the Nova. Back when I got mine, I looked at the 870, Browning BPS (and I'm a Browning fan) and Nova. Niether one felt as good as the Nova, and it just seemed like a superior product, and I have no regrets. Fine shotgun that fit us bigger framed guys better.[^]

I'm huge Benelli fan. I've owned several SuperBlack Eagles, and now own an M-1 (pump/auto), and a new M-2. I prodded and poked one of our shooting group to buy a Nova (I thought how could he go wrong). After shooting the Nova for several sessions, I came to the conclusion that it was one of the worst pumps, I had ever handled. It's poorly balanced, front heavy, rattley, and points about like a sledge hammer. Functioning was flawless; but the action scraped. I just didn't like the gun. Buy a nice Remington 870, preferably a Wingmaster; or spend a little more, and get a Model 12 Winchester. Just my two cents, but I've been there, seen it, and shot it.0 -
Beeramid, I noticed that you said this gun suits bigger framed guys better. Although I am fairly stocky built and shoulders are fairly broad, I stand only 5'6" and have fairly short lengh with my arms. I did notice that Benelli offers this gun with a short stock. Should I go with the shorter one or will this gun not suit my needs because of my size? I have only seen the Benelli Nova pump on the internet. I haven't had the opportunity to check one out in person yet. I have shot a regular size 870 wingmaster with no problems, if that is any comparison. I do not want to go with the wingmaster because I do not want to be paranoid the whole time I am in the woods, afraid that I may get a scratch on the pretty finish. I want a good dependable shotgun that is capable of shooting all 12 ga. shells, from 2 3/4 to 3 1/2 mag, that I am not afraid to get dirty with, so to speak.[:D] 0 -

I think you'll be fine, I'm 5'11" with ultra wide shoulders and thick. I've got a cousin who is around 5'5" to 5'6" on a much smaller scale and he really likes my gun and is able to use it with no problems. If you are able to shoot a full sized shotgun such as the 870, this gun sould work fine. It is a little more bulky then the 870, but I happen to like that better. Anybody can shoot it though, I know younger teens that use them. In that statement, I was kind of poking fun at mooseyard. If you can find one locally you ought to swing by and check it out.
