Makarov for my wife??
I work a swing shift. Leaving my wife home alone some nights. She likes my CZ-40P at home, but it's too large for her to carry if she needs to go out. Do you thing a 9x18 or 380 Mak would be suitable. I've heard though that the recoil can be pretty harsh. Never shot one myself, would like to have one though.

trigger pull is rough and heavy. They do kick hard. I have shot them all and the best are the east german and russian ones. I have a PA 63 which is a hungarian Walther pp copy in 9mm makarov. It is a nice and well made gun and a good gunsmith can put a trigger job on it to make it smooth and lighter to pull. My wife uses it for self defense at home when I am away cause my Steyr M9 is also too wide for her. Look int those, they are in my opinion a bit more ergonomic on teh feel and grip angle and are just as or less expensive as a Russian or German Mak. 0 -
try out one of the lady smiths, i think that is what they are called. it is an automatic .380 and is very small and light. it is what my stepmom carries.

It is a very accurate and VERY reliable handgun, but you may want to have her shoot one first, for a gun that size they are a real cannon and tend to have pretty harsh recoil (which I happen to like[}:)]). If she is comfortable shooting it, then it would be a fine choice for a carry piece

Trigger pull one the Russian Commercial versions is very slick, not at all objectionable, at least on the two I own.

Nothing wrong with the snubbie .38 or the Smith 3913 (even in 9mm). I think the PA-63's have much sharper recoil than the Makarov, even if they can have the triggers smoothed easier. Do these things matter in self-defense? I doubt it. Adrenaline makes you plenty strong enough to pull any trigger, and not even notice it. Also consider the Star BM.

Don't forget...
She has great control and lovesh the 40p (40S&W) I've heard that has some pretty serious recoil, comparable to the mak do you think??

The 40 probably has a harder push, but the Mak cycles very quick, they have a pretty quick kick. Get the Pearce grips too, I had the factory grips chew through a shooting glove in one range trip[;)]

Have her try a bunch before you settle on one. My wife is deadly with her Bulgarian 9x18. I've also seen my 5'2" and 120 lb wife empty the mag from a GI issue 1911 into a 3" circle at 25 feet. So my wife is just deadly. Point is, get your wife lots of range time with lots of different calibers. Let her determine which she likes best.

My wife absolutely loves my PA 63 ... as much as I do ... of the MANY she has to choose from she likes the size, weight, and is dead on with it up to about 15/20 Yds. I'd let your wife try one first and then see what she thinks. 38's are OK ... still a wheel gun, though. The round is much better than the .380.
It actually out performs (by far) my PPK/S in most departments.0 -
My dad has a couple Maks and I've shot them a few times. The only problem I had with them is the feel of the recoil that people have discussed. It wasnt that the recoil was too much, but rather the fact that after a couple mags, my hand started to hurt with each shot. The recoil seems to be quick and harsh like the .40cal but worse. Your wife may not like that but she should like that it's a sturdy and dependable weapon.
Anybody comes through that door, you put two in the chest and one in the head!0
