Colt Officers Model .22 LR

I am looking at a, what I believe to be, Colt Officers Model .22LR double action pistol. The gun has a somewhat tapered barrel, adj front and adj rear sights, flat top and some really nice ivory grips. Opening the cylinder I find the serial number (#17---). It is stamped with the VP on the trigger guard. Here is my question. This gun also has a checkered backstrap, is that factory? The cylinder also has a "*" (star) on the front side and opposite the star is a number 8. Could this gun have been back to the custom shop and checkerd and accurized? The current owner assures me that this is the case.....PLEASE HELP.....Whats it worth?

    txstream... Welcome to the forums. I have a couple Colt Officers Model "Match" revolvers, one in .22 and one in .38spl.

    There was also an Officers Model "Target" made by Colt. These guns did not come with ivory grips, but checkered wood with Colt medallions. My guns have a flat blued finish on the backstrap.

    The checkering you have may be "custom". I do not know what the star and the 8 mean. These revolvers are valued at around $650.00 to $700.00 in 100% condition. Usually "customizing" will detract from the collector value of these guns as collectors want them in "factory original" condition.

    I appreciate your reply and hope you can answer another question or two. Does anyone know where to find info about the proof marks that Colt used? I have been told that the "*" or star is indicative of Colt's Custom Shop by the previous owner of the Officers Model .22. I can not verify or contest this claim as I havent found any info on Colt proof marks. As far as this Officers Model goes...I am assuming that this is the Third Model...produced from 1930-1935 (when the bull or heavy barreled officers was introduced). Am I on the right track? What is the difference between the Officers Model and the Officers Model Target? Thanks in advance for any and all info you can provide.

    Does anyone know if the "*" , star, stamp is indicative of Colt's custom shop? If so then can Colt , through its archives, verify this fact and the fact that a particular gun indeed went to the custom shop for work? Thanks
