Handgun for hunting
I am wanting to buy a handgun for hunting whitetail deer. I see alot of shows where they use a Thompson Contendor, but I don't know if that would be the best gun for hunting. I like the choice of calibers, but I will only need one. I sure would like some advice. I would like to keep it in the $1000 range.

savage makes a nice striker bolt handgun and if you like the 1911 grip check out the new thor. the 500 or 460s&w are nice as well[8D] 0 -
I love hunting w/ my Contender. It's very light, can be had in a variety of calibers, and points well.
The way I see it is, if you don't make your first shot count while pistol hunting, you probably aren't going to have much luck on your second shot either. However, I'm a bowhunter first, so using a single shot pistol is almost a second nature to me.

I think the ultimate hunting handgun currently out there today is the s&w 460.....2300 fps with a 200grn pill.....200 yds capable.....and should be right within your price range.....what a revolver

Handgun hunting is difficult. A lot of people can not shoot a large handgun well. The best thing is to go to a shooting range and rent a couple, to see if you are Ok with it before you lay down a $1000 for a gun you can't shoot. I have a TC that I bought form a gentlman who said it about broke his wrist, got a good deal on it. You might want to try a revolver since they weigh more, there fore have less kick. I started handgunning with a 357mag, shoot three whitetails in three years, each walked less than 20ft, before dropping. I now have a 454 ruger that I hunt with. 0 -

For what its worth I took my Mule deer last year in Colorado with a S & W 629 44 mag I use hornady 240 JHP. 0 -
I use the encore and contender and have taken many critters from rabbits to deer.It just depends on what state you hunt for the barrel or caliber you'll need. If you could use a 2506 in the encore would be your best 1 for deer, not much recoil or the 243,7mm08, the list could go on and on for deer size game.Your cost would be will under the $1000/frame $250,barrel$220/scope$50. And for the 2nd shot if you miss you can reach out and touch them also [:D]

Here in Iowa you have you use a straight cased cartridge of atleast 38 but no more than 50. I use a Taurus 44 mag Stainless hunter with a really big 12in barrel. It takes a string arm to hold well but its so accurate its scary and my cousin took down a whitetail with a 8in 44 Taurus last year at 40 yards. Trick is put a small 4x scope on it or a red dot like I use and it will help alot more.
In my area we also have had a resurgance of Pumas in the state so when I am out hunting with my shotty I carry a 357 Ruger since they have gotten a bit brazen as of late and are wondering closer to people and towns.0 -
almost any of them will work , but I preferr a good revolver , and I found that out the hard way so if you're looking for a good encore let me know and i will put one up on the auction side that has less than 2 box shot thru it 15" blued in 243 [:D] 0 -
Ruger .44 Mag. single action with 10" brl. and 2X Leupold scope. Rolls back nicely so you can shoot it all day at the range, built very,very well and topped with a good 2X scope I don't think can be beat. I've killed 11 or 12 white tail with mine all but one with the first shot. Quite a handgun. 0 -
41 or 44mag works well if you are in range and have good bullet placement. My 2 cents [8D]

I use a contender. Even with a 14" bbl it is not really that big since it has no cylinder or action to add to the overall length. Alot lighter too. My 45-70 Super 16 plus the muzzle tamer is another story. [:D] 0 -

Scoped BFR in 45-70. Works very well on Deer and Elk and nice to have around in case of curious bears!
