Which is stronger, Winchester 94AE or Marlin 1894

Is the Winchester action stronger or would the Marlin be the stronger of the two rifles, in pistol calibers such as 44 Mag or 45 Colt?

    I don't know if one is any stronger than the other , but I do like the closed receiver of the marlin with a true side eject over the open top of the winchester

    I don't think it would matter in that situation. I do think the Marlin is stronger since they offer the 45-70, 444, and 450 marlin.

    The winchester is stronger, but the marlin is a lot better gun for pistol ammo. I have been shooting ammo through my 44 magnum marlin that execeeds the original 45-70 carbine load as far as energy is concerned(315 gr bullet at 1500 fps), with no bad side effects. The win will only feed magnums reliably, where the marlin will feed russians and specials too. The brass will fail long before either rifle will fail. If the brass fails, I would much rather have the marlin vent out the right side, rather than the winchester vent right into my face.

    Hello Chris8161,

    Of the two specific actions you list, the Winchester 94AE is considerably stronger. The Winchester 94AE is an evolution of the original Model 94, which is designed for much larger cartridges (30-30, 32 WS, 307 Win, 375 Win, etc.). The Marlin Model 94 was strictly designed as a pistol sized cartridge gun only. Whoever it was that mentioned the 45-70, .444, and .450 Marlin cartridges, he is mixing up the models... those cartridge were/are only offered in the Marlin Model 1895, which is a larger & considerably stronger action than the Marlin Model 1894.

    Of the two Models you mention, the Marlin is better suited for shooting the pistol cartridges you mention. Winchester's best "pistol" cartridge gun was the Model 1892.

    IMHO the Marlin is much easier to use and clean than any of the WRA guns.Unscrew one screw,drop the ever and slide out the bolt and run your rod through from the action end.Just the way you should clean a rifle.Try that with a Winnie..On second thought DON'T,you would be terribly sorry.Since I am a clean-nik when it comes to my firearms,I highly recomend the Marlin products.GOOD LUCK.modoc
