Safari by Keith
I have this book, "Safari" by Elmer Keith, which is in good condition for its age. It has some shelf wear and the edges of the pages are getting yellowish. If it had a dust cover it's long gone. It is autographed to me by Keith with a 1974 date, but not with green ink that he usually signed his letters with (I have a bunch of those). There are also several typos in the book which Keith correct in ink.
I'm once heard a guy named Fowler actually wrote this book and not Keith. Apparently Fowler used Keith's name to publicize and sell his work. That being the case is this book collectible? I've never seen it reprinted like Keith's other works; perhaps because of copyright ownership? Just wondering if its worth anything other than the memory of an ol' friend. Value depends largely upon condition and upon edition. The autograph is a + the fact that it is inscribed to you and not just an autograph is a small -. Lack of dust cover hurts as does the shelf wear and foxing. Retail price range $250-$350.
I should add that there are copies around, though it is somewhat scarce, and the market is a bit slow. A knowledgeable dealer might give you up to half the above range.0 -

I have been watching for a reasonably priced copy of this book for some time. Have not seen one go for less than $275.00 lately. They come up on eBay now and again and I've seen it on abebooks website. I've never heard anyone mention the name Fowler in relation to Keith's books. I have read that Elmer corrected errors in every copy of Safari, by hand, that past over his desk. If I had to guess; if the signature ink is the same color as the correction ink, it is probably authentic. Every autographed book I've seen has his signature, a date, and Salmon Idaho along with a message if he knew the owner. I think you are lucky to have any copy, even if the dust jacket is long gone... 0
