Checkering Question

Being a child of the 70's, I remember that a lot of guns back then, and up through the 80's, were made with pressed checkering (which I hate). I've noticed fewer guns seem to have this now, and I was wondering....is this because computers and improvements in manufacturing tools have allowed gun makers to do cut checkering at a more reasonable cost than in the 70's and 80's, or did the manufacturers just figure out that consumers hate pressed checkering and decide to go back to the real thing?

    I am recutting some old checkering. I'm just following the original lines to point up the edges. Its coming along very nicely.
    My problem is the very short inside corner lines. I'm having a very hard time cutting those. Any advice?

    A lot of stocks today are built on computer driven machines (forget what they call 'em) that can also do the checkering. Boyd's uses such machines and they build stocks for several gun makers.

    A lot of those old pressed checkering jobs could be recut to look very nice with a little bit of time and effort.

    Pressed checkering is sort of like taking a shower with a raincoat on! To the uneducated it looks like checkering, but is really a weak form of dressing up a wood stock. Some of the "cut" checkering today is done on a CNC milling machine. It is a big improvement over pressed or stamped checkering, but it still has a lot to be desired. It is pretty well limited to the basically flat spots on a wood stock. A lot of time you will notice two lines are close together and then almost a skipped area, and then two more lines. I suppose it is a sign of todays technology. Hand cut checkering is time consuming, and today's manufacturers don't have a lot of that.

    I've never tried to re-cut pressed checkering, is it hard to do? And where do you start?

    It's not a very hard job, it will just take time, the same as if you were cutting a new one.
    You can start where ever you want as you already have the lines to go by. Just cut into the depressions, one line at a time at one angle, and then cut it again the other way.
    If your careful and not all thumbs it will turn out pretty good.
