I agree with KINGJOEY 100%. I started my son at about the same age. He started with a CZ 452 Lux, but a smaller rifle like a Chipmunk or a Henry Mini-Bolt(or whatever it's called) would have been easier. 0 -

I started out shooting a .22 LR rifle (an Ithaca Model 49 Saddle Gun) at age 6... just about 40 years ago. I still own that little rifle, and over the past 40 years, I have shot over 50,000 rounds through it. I hope to someday give it to a grandson and start his shooting career with it (I have two grand daughters so far)[^]

Just the mere fact that it is an actual RIFLE, with individual cartridges (doesn't have to crank up a spring to shoot) and says BOOOM -
Oh yeah, it will keep the interest better than any airgun.
The lessons learned by shooting the .22 is any bit as good as learning with an airrifle, even better perhaps.
I learned to shoot the .22lr Schultz&Larsen rifles at the silhuette targetting range, that was much more interesting than any airgun in the garden.

But we sometimes do kick back, relaxes and downs a beer. =o)0
