Winchester Model 62 Question

I just purchased a 62, 22 short with triangular loading notch, that is in about 80-85%(at most) metal and 85-90% wood condition for $350, but....

The serial number is 8490XX.

The proof marks match up on the barrel and receiver, so is this a transition rifle made from an 03 or 1890 receiver?

What would the approximate date of manufacture be?

Did I get lucky and buy a rifle that's actually worth more than what I paid?

    Nope, you did not get lucky. The serial number is too high for a Model 62, and it is highly likely that you have a "parts" gun made with a Model 90 or 06 frame. Serial number 849000 would have been made up just before WW II.

    I posted some info over on the Winchestercollector forum. According to Schwing's book, this looks to be legit. Please check my post and let me know.

    While it may be possible that it is indeed legit, unfortunately, there is no way to prove it. Trying to convince an advanced Winchester slide-action .22 collector that it is one of an alleged 363 made will be even more difficult. The odds say that it is simply a piece parts rifle. Schwing's book is a dyamite source of information, and I highly recommend it to anyone that has an interest in the Models 1890/90, 1906/06, 61, and 62.
