Hercules Bullseye Gunpowder

Friend bought some sealed Hercules Bullseye gunpowder - age unknown but obviously aged- which he wants me to use to reload 22 Hornet ammo for him.

1) The cans state this is pistol powder; can it be safely used for 22 Hornet?
2) Is this powder listed as "2400" in reload data references?
3) Any safety concerns with using the powder, assuming answers to the above are "yes" ?

    "Bullseye" is one of the fastest burning reloading powders available. It has a significant amount of nitroglycerin in its ingredients. Its generally "NOT" used for reloading rifle cartridges. Its much faster burning then "2400". DO NOT use Bullseye to reload cartridges using 2400 data. It could be fatal to the shooter.

    The age of the powder is not nearly as important as its storage method. I am now shooting some powders that I know are 40 years old. As long as the powder was stored correctly, no rust is in the can and it appears dry it is probably just fine to use.

    HOWEVER,Bullseye is NOT repeeat NOT 2400 powder. Do not use any powder unless it is identified first. Every name is important. For example, H4831 is not the same as IMR4831.

    Get a reloading book, read it and follow the instructions exactly as written.

    Not to criticize but it doesn't appear by your questions that you have any experience in reloading. These questions are quite basic. If you don't know to check your reloading manual for appropriate powder and burn rates for a specific ctg. then you should not be reloading, especially for someone else. You are going to end wrecking a gun and getting hurt or killed. You need to buy a good reloading manual and start from the beginning until you understand what you are doing.

    Bullseye is still being produced (under the Alliant brand), and current Bullseye data can be used, with normal precautions, for the powder you have on hand.
    2400 is a completely different powder than Bullseye, and data for the 2 is not interchangable.

    Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.

    Plus, it is legal to load ammo only for your own use. You are required to have a manufacturers license to reload for anyone else; that would be a valid excuse for you to beg off reloading for your friend.

    Alliant only lists 2400 & Reloder 7 powders for the .22 Hornet. Bullseye's primary purpose is for handgun loads and secondarily for 12 ga. light target loads. http://recipes.alliantpowder.com/rg.taf?_function=centerfire&step=1

    Good point Neal. I had forgotten that one, you can only reload for your own usage.

    Bull's-eye is the dirtiest powder I have ever used, even if you could use it{and you can't} in a .22 caliber it would clog the bore after a few rounds{slight exaggeration but not by much}

    My friend,

    2400 powder is not interchangeable with Bullseye powder. They are at the other end of the burning rate spectrum from each other.

    As previously stated Bullseye is one of the fastest powders manufacturered and 2400 is one of the slowest pistol powders manufactered. To interchange the two would be disasterous for your health.

    In their manual they specify only two powders suitable for the 22 Hornet which are 2400 and Reloader 7. My advice is to spend some time studying the manual.
