What exactly is an MP-5?
Is an MP-5 considered a handgun or a long rifle? In my state (louisiana) you have to be 18 to buy a rifle/shotgun but 21 to buy a handgun. I'm 19 and need something to go huntin with...[:D] Thanks yall.

The Heckler & Koch MP5 is a 9mm submachine gun. (That is, it's a Class III full auto rifle.) I really don't think that you want one for hunting.
I suggest that you first join the National Rifle Association, & read the American Rifleman magazine that they send you each month for a year or so. Then, stop by a local gun shop (not a Big Box Store) & see what they recommend for the type of hunting you plan to do.

You can forget about buying an MP-5. It is a fully automatic gun. This means it is illegal to own unless you are a class 3 dealer - or get a class 3 stamp for a full auto manufactured prior to May 1986. That's if your state and local laws will permit it and you can convice the ATF, wait a year, and pay huge taxes and thousands of dollars for an MP-5.
I'm not even sure the MP-5's existed in 1986. You can check Heckler and Koch's website to see when they were originally made.
I think they may actually have some civilian versions now that are semi auto only. In any case, while they are technically a sub machinegun, they most likely would be considered a rifle (check your state laws about rifle minimum barrel and overall lengths).

Sorry, the hunting thing was a badly placed joke. What about an AR-15 or an M-16? I mean the semi auto versions. I'm pretty new to these guns but not new to shooting. I've been shooting since I was 8 years old. Now that I'm finally out and on my own, I think it's time for me to pick up something to protect myself with in my home. I have a shotgun for my hunting needs (albeit I don't have much time to hunt). I was mainly talking about the MP-5's that you can find on gb.com (when searching for mp-5). But I guess they fall under that class III catagory also. Oh well.

They've been around since the early 60's, there's quite a few transferable ones around, but they're going for $12K+ usually[B)]

The MP5 is an anti-terrorist submachine gun. It has no other use. Certainly not deer hunting.
I would recommend lookin at your state regulations to see what is legal in LA. I'm more in the opinion that .24 cal and up is what is legal. i.e. .243 Win, 6mm Rem, 250 Savage, .257 RBTS. and larger for hunting deer. -good luck

Alright. A shotgun it is. I would like to own a MP-5 (civilian) or something like that as a "wow i'm cool factor" but i'm not that worried about it. Thanks yall.

The civilian version of the MP-5 is the HK 94. The HK 94 is registered as a rifle the MP 5 is a SBR/ class III and the HK SP 89 is normaly registered as a pistol.
16 inch barrel and SEMI automatic only. it may or may not have the retractable buttstock. (depending on the version) There is a slotted barrel shroud available to disguise the longer barrel. as well as a plastic shroud that makes it look like a suppressed mp 5.

If you were to change the barrel length to the MP 5 length you would have to apply to the ATF to convert it to a "SBR" Short Barreled Rifle.
I believe this is a $200 fee. Then of course The SBR must be legal to posess where you live. Some states and areas do not allow this.
Mp 5's were available in at least 3 cal's 9mm, .40 cal , and 10mm. the 10's and 40's are few and far between.
There are some other american companies that make copys of the HK 94 and SEMI automatic versions of the MP5. Special Weapons, Bobcat Weapons,Vulcan Weapons, Hesse even made recievers. Opinions vary on them as widely as there are colors in the spectrum. The clones will cost you $1000 + and the HK's of course command top dollar. The Gun Broker auctions here do list 94's and clones. Just search "HK 94"
A less expensive option would be to look for a 9mm carbine such as a Beretta Storm0
