Need help removing rust...

Kent here again. I'm curious as to how all of ya gunblazing fanatics out there deal with the red/orange menacing mineral also known as our buddy, rust. I have a Savage .22 Rimfire SemiAuto, and after our latest cabin trip the nightly condensation attacked my poor little rifle and rusted the metal exterior pretty bad. I need to get it off somehow, but havent found a reliable way to get it off, and prevent it. Any and all suggestions are welcome. Thanks!

    Blue Wonder Bore Cleaner works great for removing it, I use Sheath to wipe the guns down to keep rust from occuring

    Hello Kent,

    Remove the stock, apply a liberal coat of Kroil, wait 24 hours, then with a minimum amount of force, use some 0000 steel wool tp gently scrub away the active rust. Re-oil with a light coat of standard gun oil.

    I use Rem oil(or gun oil) and 0000 steel wool and the guns have always come out fine.

    Oil and a stiff-bristled toothbrush is a good start too, I save the steel wool for the stubborn rust

    This will sound really crazy, but it works. An old time Gun smith told me this. Apply a liberal ammount of lube,(oil). I use Ezoks. Let is stand then rub the area with a solid brass key.....I guess any solid brass object will work. Rust comes off, blue stays on..............Try it. it works.

    I use Break-free and 0000 brass wool to work on rust spots. When the rust is gone, clean off the oil and apply a thin coat (or two) of carnuba wax. Trewax works well. Once the rust has started, there is really no way to stop it dead, but the wax will slow it waaaaaay down.

    A cartridge case mouth will scrape oiled, light rust off pretty good. The brass is softer than steel or bluing and the brass stain wipes off afterward.

    I need to remove some rust on a gun myself, where can I find this steel wool? Home Depot maybe?

    -I would hesitate to use steel wool on ANY highly polished surface, blued or otherwise. Even quadruple-ought ( 0000 ) steel wool will "scratch", maybe not removing the blued finish exactly, but leaving a dull spot.

    Instead, I would, were I you, some common brake fluid (NOT brake cleaner that we use to degrease guns with) on a soft cloth and rub the rust out with that. That seems to do the trick without damaging the finish for me. Also, BRASS wool, is an option. It will not scratch a finely finished gun. However, if you have a gun that you use often and aren't worried a lot about the bluing here and there, the steel wool route might not make a lot of differnce, appearance-wise. But, I wouldn't go any harsher than the 0000 steel wool.

    Right off hand, I don't know where you can get the brass wool except at Brownells. I do know that you can get various grades ( #3 coarse all the way to 0000 very fine )of steel wool at any good hardware store or at one of those monster building mart stores. You may even find the brass wool there, too(?).

    It's not all that hard to find. I know I have some and I believe I got it at Big Lots.
