Barrel length for 35 Whelen

I am getting ready to build a 35 Whelen and want to know what barrel length you all suggest. This will primarily be for spot and stalk hunting and I plan to use 225 or 250 gr bullets. It will probably have a medium contour barrel and weight is not a big issue.

  I supose it would depend on the terrain that you will be mostly hunting. If it is timber and brush with shots running 50 to 150 yds then you can make a case for 22" or maybe even a bit shorter. If you are going to have more open spaces where you will be getting farther shot opertunities then you will have to have more velosity and a longer tube, say 23" or 24", is a good idea. Still the 35 Whelen will never be a long range cartridge, that is what magnums are for.

  Considering the case capacity and bore diameter, a 22" barrel will do as well as any.

  With proper loading you will see no real world difference in ballastics using any barrel lenght from 18 to 22 inches as compared to longer ones. There are very very few cartridges that need a long pipe but I certainly have nothing against them. i just prefer shorter barreled hunting guns because I can use denser..ie...fancier wood and a heavier contour barrel for stiffness and still build an rile in the 8to 8.5 lb. range.

  22" or 24" should be optimum for most any .30-06 based cartridge.
  
  Save the seals-club a liberal instead.
