Ammo in car trunk

Is it safe to have 9mm ammo in the clip in the car trunk while transporting in the summer heat? I hate to shoot my self in the back while driving. I dont think my insurance covers that.

    i doubt it would go off, but i don't like the idea of my guns being in the trunk. they leak and all sorts of stuff.

    I'm not an expert, but i did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night.

    [8D]--Yo Doug, It is pretty safe to carry ammo in clips in trunk-it don't get THAT hot, BUT in California, on public hiways, if you carry any ammo in the trunk, You can,t (legally) carry the corresponding hangun (even unloaded)in the same trunk-unless BOTH are EACH in seperate locked containers!--[}:)]JIMBO

    Thanks guys for the info I didn't no both would be in seperate lock boxes so ammo stays up front till I get a Conceal hand gun permit.

    [8D]--Yo doug, I don't want to make this too complicated, but if you are JUST a civilian ,even DISCAHRGED military and you have a CCW-you still can't carry a LOADED handgun-in a vehicle-on public hiways. There are a lot of exceptions-ie: LEO, ACTIVE military, FED's-etc. But this general rule applies to all in CAL.--JIMBO

    Despite what you see in the movies, ammo in fires does not explode spectacularly, it cooks off with a little pop.

    I am positive (almost[8D]) that there is no such provision in California law.

    [8D]--Yo EOD---I'm "almost" positive that if you read the California Handgun safety certificate handbook and check Ca. Penal code sections-12025/12026/12027 and 12050 ypu'll see that although each county is different they are all based on those PC's--JIMBO (now if I'm to strict-talk to a local Cal. Highway Patrol office)

    The only problem is that the propellant could degrade. I also remember some controversy regarding surplus ammo that was defective and blowing actions apart, one theory being that degraded powder became an explosive and caused the problem. I never learned if anyone came to a definite conclusion.

    Without being in battery, a round is pretty harmless from the standpoint of your concern if it cooks off. I read once, long ago, of a 30/06 round being cooked off on a hot plate covered with a cardboard box. None of the fragments penetrated the box.
