Briefly -- they tried to make war more "civilized" and "humane" and make sure there would be a basis for peace after the shooting was over.

Generally referred to the "Law of Land Warfare."

Banned poison gas, torture, "dumdum" (expanding) bullets and other weapons designed to wound more than kill, etc.

do the Google thing and look at what war was like at the time.

It gives countries recourse against others that inordinately offend their citizenry and the members of their militaries in activies occuring during wartime operations so that they may try those responsible for inhumane and criminal activities in a world court venue with the consensus of the nations that are signers in agreement of the policies of the Convention, and punish them.

It is times like these that the practice of "take NO prisoners" is quite apropriate!
The Geneva Convention is a "Dinosaur" which we proudly and collectively wear around our necks"I promise not to kill you if you!
I'm going to "go out on a limb" here and predict that sooner rather than later, this agregious agreement will be extinct, null and void!

"I promise not to kill you, even though you slaughter everything I hold dear"!

the geneava conventions refer to hostilities between two UNIFORMED entities. therefore technicaly speaking the insurgency in iraq is not covered under the geneava accords.

we are fighting an un-uniformed guerilla type enemy much like those we faught during the Philippian insurection, panama in the 1920's or 30's (not sure of the dates) and later in the vietnam war (vietcong not NVA.)our modern opponent preffers to fight on its own terms through the primary use of IEDs and ambushes. rarely in the iraqi insurgency is there a stand up fight between U.S. forces and the insurgents, jihadists or whatever they are being called this week.

because of this the geneava convention/accords should not be done away with but should be updated to meet the needs of the modern battlefield and it's unique circumstances. the majority of modern conflicts are of the low intensity SASO or peackeeping type and therefore the geneava accords need to be tailored to this new form of warfare.

we are fighting an enemy that preys on our beleif in the geneava conventions. because of this they will have the advantage over us because they do not follow the rules. how many U.S. soldiers have had to make horrible decisions because of this . . .shoot the car coming to theit road block cause it won't stop only to see it is a family or wait to see if it blows up in your face. while i have yet to be deployed to the iraqi theatre of operations i know many friends that are over there and know of at least 6 that have been injured and one killled because of the tactics that our enemy uses

i personaly do not beleive that you need to carry an anti tank rifle for personal protection.

it doesn't matter how big your gun is, it's what you do with it when it counts :)

Fellows, a number of you need to read the accords. The Hague Convention actually did what a lot of you are attributing to the Geneva Convention.

Yes, the Geneva convention mostly dealt with treatment of POW's, while the Hague accords were mostly about weaponry.

Interestingly, while these treaties talk only about uniformed forces, they makes no specification as to what a uniform is. If one side ties a strip of green cloth around a bicep, and declares that to be the uniform, then they are protected.

All nations condemn "francs-tireurs", or guerilla forces, and if you are found under arms without a uniform in a war zone, you can be summarily executed.

So if you are gonna join some kind of militia or something, make sure you and your pals are wearin' the same t-shirt...[}:)]

    p3Skyking,
Good point, the two conventions need to be read for full understanding. For gun enthusiasts that always want to use hollowpoint bullets, I would refer them to article 23 of the Hague Convention.

Some good info on the convention can be found here.

A lot of people seem to think that we would be better off trashing these conventions and I disagree. Just because other countries do not abide by them and act like savages is no reason for us to do the same. We have won wars simply because we were more humane than the enemy. The huge numbers of German troops that surrendered to us rather than the Russians is one reason to keep them. If you become as cruel as your enemy, no body will ever surrender, but will fight to the death.

frogbert pointed out another good reason we choose to abide by thse accords. If you lower yourself to the level of the people you are fighting, you cannot then stand on moral high ground and prosecute the enemy after the war is over. We possibly could, but after that, our reputation would be damaged forever and the enemy would be far less likely to surrender knowing he will be tortured or even killed as a POW.

Cruelty to the enemy after you take him prisoner does not help you fight or win a war. The use of illegal weapons also does not help you to fight or win. Smarter tactics and strategy are what wins wars.

We had to carry a Geneva Convention card in addition to our military I.D. and we were cautioned to wear our insignia and rank markings.
Of course we all knew that was BS if you were captured.
There are parts of the convention the US is not a signatory. I believe treatment of irregulars is one of them.
