Semi Automatic Pump Shotgun?

What the heck is a "Semi Automatic Pump Shotgun"? This makes no sense to me.

they do make some semi auto shotguns that also have a pump. i think benelli makes them. the pump is backup if the semi auto jams.
I'm not an expert, but i did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night.0 -
Yep, this guy is way off base. They probably used part of the info from another listing or something.
Benelli M3 is one true example of a semi-auto/pump and the Franchi SPAS-12 is also, probably others too...0 -

Only one I know of is the Franchi SPAS 12. As I understand, the pump is used with the magazine interruptor to allow chambering of shells that are not next in line.

For the Benelli M3 at least, the selector switch is towards the front of the forarm. A quick twist changes modes. What it is mostly for is to shoot specialty ammo like bean-bag rounds, flares, gas rounds, etc. Mainly stuff that has too low of a recoil to cycle a semi-auto. 0 -

The two semi/pump shotguns that I am familiar with are the SPAS 12 and the M3. I belive there are a few others as well. The idea behind them was that most semi autos work well with full power ammo but not with low power or "special" rounds (CS, bean bags, ect). The option of being able to switch makes it an all arround good gun. The M3 has a switch at the end of the slide that you turn then pull back on the slide to go to pump, to go back you push the pump foward all the way and turn the switch back. Benelli semi auto shot guns are super reliable my M1 (jsut semi) will even cycle light target load reliably, but it wont cycle reliably with low recoil field loads. I have the SPAS 12 and it is cool just to have but if I NEEDED a shot gun it would stay in the safe. It was built as a great idea but is very hard to run. It will not cycle unless you have full power, and I do meen full power loads, and to use it just as a pump gun, it is big and heavy. To switch form semi to pump there is a button in the middle of the slide, you push it in and pull back about 1/2 in and it lock into pump. To switch back you do the same thing in reverse.
