Remington 721 in .338 Lapua
Can a 721 long action in 3006 be built to a .338 Lapua or is that cartrige tooo big? If so then what would be needed to be done after a re-barrel?

That's quite a question being it's your first one. One answer is yes, it can be done. The right answer is that it's not recommended but it can be done.
Opening the boltface for the rim diameter of the 338 Lapua doesn't leave enough metal surrounding the boltface to be "safe". It leaves a very thin little ledge that will damage easily. Then you have all of the standard fixes to the receiver; open the feed rails, adjust the follower width, get a wider and longer box, adjust the feed ramp, then do all of the feed testing and adjusting with everything in place.
If it's performance that you're looking for, I would select the .338 Remington Ultra Mag and call it good to go. Performance will be the same, it just doesn't say .338 Lapua. I've shot several of these that have terrific accuracy. Something to consider.

Thank you for the friendly welcome and sharing of knowledge. I guess it's one of those questions I have been wondering about for a while, only recently has it come to the forefront.
I was concerned about those kinds of issues. Safety is paramount so I will definitely quit thinking about Lapua. I will do some research on the .338 Rem ultra mag. I don't see all the fuss over that cartridge like the Lapua but that certainly doesn't mean it's not a performer.

I have a stnlss/fiberglass Rem 700 in 338RUM. It IS a shooter! Mine wears a rather light-weight barrel (great for mountains/Elk) and is prior to the j-lock bolt. A nice weapon to consider. Handloads can increase the performance, factory loadings are rather mild.
