Ramrod ballistics
What is the estimated range of a ramrod fired from a muzzle-loading rifle, in the heat of battle? At the Fredericksburg National Military Battlefield Park they have two examples on display. One is deeply into a tree limb. The other is through an amputated foot.

Never Fired a Metal Ram Rod out of a Musket....But have on Several occasions fired Wooden Ram Rods outta 40/45/50 caliber Percussion Rifles...They went about 25 yards down range...I'd amagine that a Musket of 54 or 69 Caliber with a War Load would get a good 100 Feet...

The only time I was dumb enough to do that was with a .58 Enfield. I bent my thumbnail backwards and laid rifle down to cuss, Forgot ramrod and sat down at picnic table and touched her off[:I]
DAMN WHAT A RECOIL !!!!!!
Bruised arm all way to elbow and shoulder for quite a ways. Earmuffs gouged a place in stock.
I went over backwards until knees hit picnic table.
Target was on plywood between two sections of telephone pole. Ramrod took side off one of poles, cleared the top of backstop and went down in the swamp, never to be heard from again.

wasan NSSAskirmisher with the hampton legion a few yers back. heard many stoies of such accidents happning. but never actually saw it happen.
i can def. see ho it could hapn to an individual rushing to et shots off uring the timmed events or a solier in the heat of battle. i thinks that this is not to big of a worry, but if it hapened to a re-enactor, a launched ramrod could easily kill a man.

i personaly do not beleive that you need to carry an anti tank rifle for personal protection.
it doesn't matter how big your gun is, it's what you do with it when it counts

I've heard of a ramrod or two being fired off when they ran out of bullets.
