Savage Muzzleloader Question

I'm having a problem with this wonderful savage muzzleloader I bought. Seems that the primers won't fit down in the breech plug pocket. I tried a couple of different primers with no luck. It has worked for about 25 shots, but now they won't enter the pocket, and previously when they did go in the pocket, after ignition, i couldn't hardly get them out. Anybody familiar with this problem, or know how to fix the problem other than getting a new breech plug and hoping for the best. Thanks.

    If it's one of the 110ML's, it sounds like you have a build up of whatever in that pocket you set them in.
    Use a magnifing glass, or a eye loupe, and check it out real good, you either have a build up or maybe a burr, either way clean it real good, and you may be back in business.
    The only primers to use are the 209 Winchester's if it is a 110ML
    If all else fails give Savage a call after the holiday...........

    I wonder if other primers are larger than the Winchester 209's because I measured the primer pocket on the breech plug and it measures .240 and the diameter of the primers I have (Remington and Active) measure at .241 to .242. I cleaned it out real good and checked for burrs, and there is none and measured the pocket again and it was still .240. Sure seems odd. Anybody else have a take on the situation. Thanks.

    you have carbon deposits in the hole. This is the same as a rifle,..you still have to clean things out,..just not as much as black powder.

    Run some hoppes or shooters choice or even a spray can of break cleaner in the pocket. Remove before doing this. Also,..re-lube the threads before putting it back together.

    We were getting 1" on a new 10ml today during load work-up and using the recipe from mine. This one will come together by tomorrow evening.

    why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

    Put safety glasses on before you spray and aerosols into that pocket!!

    I got the problem solved. I went and tried the Winchester 209 primers as amazing as it is, they worked just fine. I think JustC told me in an earlier thread about the Winchester primers being the only primers to use in a Savage. Yup. He was right. They worked. Now I can get back to business at hand and start shooting it without fighting with the primer situation. Thanks.
