Confused

HAIRY
Am looking at an AR-15 A-2 with a 16" bbl. Does this require a special permit for a Short Barrel Rifle from the BATF? If so, what is the cost?

    It shouldn't. Minimum rifle barrel length is 16" and overall length is around 24"

    Hairy, no permit needed, as long as the overall length of the weapon is 24 inches, I just bought one the other day from J&t Distributing in Winchester, Ky----with all the evils on it----flash hider, bayonet lug, front and rear A-2 sights, carry handle, and short hand guards

    You can legally own the 10.5" and 11.5" barrels, too, but they must have a flashhider "permanently attached" to the barrel, enough to make the assembly the "legal minimum" length of 16". The hider is threaded onto the barrel. It is then either welded or silver soldered and pinned onto the barrel. Such attachments are readily broken, if need be. You can also legally buy the shorter barrels, even have them mounted in upper receiver groups. However, to legally assemble such an upper to an AR lower, you have to pay the ATF a $200 tax, get fingerprinted, get permission from your police chief, sherriff, etc, furnish a picture, have a vault to secure the NFA type firearm, endless bs.

    No you don't. You buy a lower that was assembled for the short barreled pistol versions.
