Mauser or SKS

I am looking for a decent cheap rifle to mostly just have fun with. Anyone have any advice which one of these will be better for my first centerfire rifle?

    And even when you run out of ammo,the most fun is findin' all the brass!

    it most cases its much cheaper to feed a SKS but they were not made to be tack drivers so its what you want it to do.[:)]

    So I take it, mausers are more accurate but sks has cheaper ammo and probably easier to dissassemble? OK, so just for sh*%# and giggles, which one would ya'll want in the small chance of ever being in a fire fight.

    Make sure you get a new Yugo Sks. I bought a used one and am having problems with the gas system. Shoots great otherwise.

    Better to carry a pistol and not need it than need a pistol and not have it.

    I've got both. The SKS would give you more rounds on target faster. The Mauser would give you more punch on the target, but at a much slower rate. (Semi-auto vs Bolt Action)

    I was in the same boat a few years ago, looking for my first center fire "fun" rifle. I ended up with a Mosin-Nagant. The 91/30, M38, or M44 can be found for under $100, ammo is dirt cheap, and they attract a LOT of attention at the range! You'd need to be careful about your backstop, though, as the 7.62x54R round is very powerful. I made lots of big dents in an old 1/2" steel pusher plate from a bulldozer with my SKS (7.62x39) at 100yds. My Mosin Nagant puts perfect holes clean through it!

    So if Osama shows up in my neighborhood in a tank, it's the Mosin Nagant 91/30. If he shows up with infantry, it's my Yugo SKS. I might even lob some grenades at them!

    Everything WILLRUSS states. The Mosin-Nagant is an excellent rifle for an all around good time at the range and they are CHEAP. Bought one from GunBroker auction (M-44)with all matching numbers for under $200 and I probably paid too much. Ammo is inexpensive although could be corrosive, just do a good cleaning job.
