22 hornet accuracy
when first introduced i read it was not the greatest, but is it true that the ruger 77 target and factory ammo can get you sub 1 MOA at 100 yards?
want a new gun and am torn between a 77 hornet and a 77 223 all weather or target model. i want the hornet for close in varmint and bobcat (not too hard on pelts) and i want the 223 for ammo prices.

The .22 Hornet is as accurate as any given .22 cal as you can make it, having done all the right things to make a rifle accurate.
However, it has about 1/2 the effective range of a .223. Meaning, it won't push a bullet of the same weight as fast as the .223 will.
I would opt for the .223 as it will do everything about twice as well as a .22 Hornet. And, the economics of reloading them are minimal. A .22 Hornet would be in my mind a secondary light varmint rifle used more as a plinker.

the hornet in the ruger will get you sub moa, probably sub 1/2 moa. but you have to shim the bolt together. the 2 piece bolt is the problem, but you should be able to get it shimmed pretty cheap.

If you decide on the Hornet, take a look at the CZ. Sub MOA right out of the box.

If you are not a reloader, the 223 will be a better choice for you. However, if you do reload, then I highly recommend the Hornet. If you really enjoy reloading, I further recommend having whichever rifle you decide upon punched out to the 22 K-Hornet.
I completely disagree with sandwarrior's comment about the the Hornet having only 1/2 the effective range of a 223 though... that is pure hogwash. The standard 22 Hornet with its 45 grain bullet is easily a 250 yard cartridge and can be squeezed out to 300 yards with good reloads. The 223 is a 300 yard cartridge, and can be squeezed out to 350 or so. The 22 K-Hornet is essentially the equal to the factory 223.

i can cloverleaf my 22 hornets at 100yds out of my model 54.

well i forget to add that i have a nef handi in 223 and in 204 and a ruger 77 243. varmint calibers are not lacking in the house.

bobski.....but can you hit an orange at 600 yards with open sights? Incidently one of my kids that you met at Damneck at the Navy Championships 5 years ago just made the President's 100 at Perry. He finished 75th. Beach

depending on your purpose, that would be the main consideration on this choice of caliber... i have a .22 hornet lone eagle pistol that i can shoot 1moa at 100 yards with my handloads... topped with a 2x6 scope. havent shot a hornet rifle yet 0 -
