7.62X39 for Deer
Got a 7.62x39 to hunt deer at short range 25 to 125 yards. If it is 5 inches high at 25 yards where should it shoot at 100 yds. Plan on using Winchester ammo?

Bought a Rossi in 7.62X39 for short range deer rifle. What good ammo is available that is not FMJ? Anybody have comments about the rifle and caliber for deer. Hope to train a young man to be a good and responsible hunter and wanted a good starter rifle. Thanks 0 -
I've heard of many people dropping deer with a well placed round from their SKS.
In addition to FMJ's you can also purchase hollow-points or Soft-points. The latter being the round of choice for hunting.

I guess we all heard about one idiot who used an sks to deer hunt with. Anyone ever here what happened to him. It was in Wisconson I think.
In no way am I implying that you have to be an idiot to use an sks to hunt with (FOR the record) But one idiot did!0 -

What are you implying? I didn't say I hunted with one, I can't use rifles in Indiana, but I've seen a few forums with people saying they hunt with one.

what he is saying is that last year this guy (Hmong) used a SKS to kill 6 wisconsin deer hunters and wound 2 or 3 others , he is now waiting on his case to come up , 6 counts murder 1 and a bunch of others , he's claiming self-defense
as to using the 7.62x39 it should do fine with just about any soft point bullet , about the same as a 30-300 -
We built a one on a mini Mauser with a short stock for kids to use when they first want to try hunting. We load it with 125 gr. Ballistic tips and it's killed a bunch of deer quite handily. 0 -

I have used a 15" encore out in Indiana work quit well out to 100 yards useing 123gr. soft points.

That Hmong killer used a 7.62x39, all right, but it was wrongly reported as an SKS in the news. The police report listed a serial number for a Saiga.
Anyway, for deer, use a soft point. The hollow points don't work so well.

The SKS is fine for deer and hits hard clear out to 300 yards. It's most effective range is 100 to 250 yards and that is as far as I would try it for fear of a wounding shot.
Here's the hunting round made by Wolf:
Remington makes a 125gr SP and Federal makes a 123gr SP, great for hunting deer, but you need some savvy about the difference in primers
(hard and soft) to safely use them in an SKS....the Wolf cartridge is safer.

the Hmoung is from the Minneapolis,Mn area and the case is still in court. Last report is that his attorny is trying to bar photos from the crime scene.
