Rifle cartridge dimensions
I did a search but can't seem to find an online source that shows the physical dimensions of rifle cartridges.

That takes a good search set and you're right, it isn't easy to find.

Your best bet is to get a book of cartridge drawings and keep it close to hand.
There is one by Howell: Designing and Forming Custom Cartridges
available from Brownells and maybe Midway. The drawback here is that he got lazy and gave capacity as the OUTSIDE of the cartridge rather than what the case actually holds. Lots of drawings and data just no correct capacity. Look up a list of case capacities and put them in the book.
J.J. Donnelly: Handloader's Manual of Cartridge Conversions. Another great book with drawings and dimensions but there are a significant number of mistakes. The common cartridges are fine, it's the oddballs that have some errors. Check your work and annotate in pencil. ADDED: This book has been updated and edited by Donnelly and a helper. I haven't seen the update yet but I'm hoping that they did their job better this time. I'll have to order it to see.

Then there is Cartridges of the World has drawings of common U.S. cases but that's all. At the end of each chapter there is a list of basic dimensions but it is somewhat lacking.
