paint finish

whats the best way to finish a kit build with paint?

the krink kit im was saving for last is gonna end up being the first i finish,..and i want to re paint every thing in a semi gloss black,.. i just dont know how to go about getting this done.

any help would be great.

    i built 2 ak pistol kits- blued one and painted the other, the paint i used was high heat paint like for a outdoor grill, this was just a test... so i primed my white metal reciever and the rest of the gun and put 3 coats of paint on and cooked it at low to med heat in my old grill for 45 minutes. i used wire to hang the gun from the upper rack. it looks good to me, and is tough as nails.

    I have used the high temp paints made for engine parts, they work well, but are not very pretty, as they seem prone to runs. My favorite paint is Krylon Semi-flat black. Wally world sells it for about $2. even though it isn't a high heat paint, it seems to take it well. I have run 240 rounds through an AK non stop, and it didn't affect the finish.

    richbug is right about the runs, when i painted mine i did light coats and after cooking it it has a semi gloss look. i had a kit built by a gunsmith a he painted it with duracoat? from 3 feet away you can't tell the diff. i paint barrel,receiver,trigger guard, top cover and selector lever, all at the same time and heated them all at the same time. mine looks like the ones atlantic firearms sell for $600,but only cost me half and i did it my self. the blued one looks good too, but the bluing is light and dark all over, but i still like it.

    so hi temp semi gloss black in light coats on a grill with low to med heat,. repeat as nessary?

    i got borred and had a can of regular flat black so i sprayed my reciver down and it dident look to bad,..but it does chip pretty easy and rubs off on your hands.

    i know this sounds pretty stupid,. was it a gas or charcoal grill?

    I've use Krylon flat and gloss black on several and they come out pretty good. It doesn't rub off and holds up to wear good.

    I've used charbroil brand grill paint for quick jobs for years. It is tough and wears well. I cure it in my kitchen oven,if the parts will fit, at about 225degrees for a couple three hours. It gives a good semi gloss black finish, like a L1A1 or Fal, and have never had any problem with runs. One or two coats is all I ever had to use because it covers so well.
