WINCHESTER MODEL 37 SERIAL NO.?
i have a winchester model 37 12 ga.excellent cond.95% or better cond.but there is not a serial number anywhere on the gun.looked every where on the gun and barrel nothing.it has a pw with a circle around it stamped on the barrel and on the receiver by it.that just tells me it is the barrel that came with the gun.and it has a number 1 on it behind the trigger guard.did winchester make this shotguns without serial numbers.and what is the value on this gun,has a 30 inch barrel model 37 steelbilt,12 ga.choke 2 3/4 cham.and it shoots great.thanks bridgebuilder41

Serial numbers were not required by the government until 1968. Your gun is probably older than that, no sweat.
I've seen 37's bring from $150 - $300 depending on condition and market. If it has the "pigtail" break open lever and/or red lettering on the bottom of the receiver it will bring a bit more than otherwise.

Hello bridgebuilder, as others have said there never were any serial numbers on the Md 37. The "1" you see is the "Inspectorts" stamp who bought off the receiver assy. Some had numbers, some had letters.
The only way to "date" your gun, would be by the style of forarm, and butt plate. If it has what's known as the "Pig Tail" for the lever to break it open, it would be a first year gun. That was the first change Winchester made, going to a solid metal lever.

Look on the front edge of the receiver between the barrel and magazine tube. Thgis is where they were put on the early guns and they did have them prior to 1968. I have an early 5 digit 16 ga and that's where it is located. 0 -
No one said that guns made before 1968 were not serial numbered. Lots of them were. Centerfire rifles, many shotguns, high grade rimfires, and all handguns were numbered. Most inexpensive rimfires and inexpensive shotguns were not.
The Model 37 is a single shot. It has no magazine tube.
A lot of double guns don't have a readily visible serial number. You have to take off the barrels and look on the water table.
Your old 16 gauge with a serial number is something other than a Winchester Model 37.

so what where the different style forarm and buttplate on the model 37.mine has a winchester wrote in the middle of the buttplate,and the forearm is fat and rounded with no marks on it.and the lever to break it open has checkering on one side where your thumb goes and slick metal on the other side. 0 -
Hello bridgebuilder: the first style forearm had a nice round nose, the second style which came out around 47/48, about an inch or two back from the nose it had a slight taper upwards, to the beginning of the round nose. The original butt plates had Winchester Repeating Arms in the circle logo. In 1957, the butt plate just had Winchester spelled out between the two screws. In 1962 they starts using Phillips head screws instead of slotted screws in the butt plate. So you can pretty much date it to a time period. Regards Dave 0 -

The Winchester Model 37 was in production from February 1936 through 1963. Winchester manufactured 1,015,554 of them. Unless a 12 gauge Model 37 is in near mint condition, they are only worth $75 - $150.
